Because Zidane was pissed off at whatever he said to him, some racial slur or something. It sucks that France lost, especially because that one guy missed his penalty kick, France is definitely the better team, Zidane went out with a bang, I thought it was hilarious. Zidane also gets the golden ball award still.

Haha... Italy will be stripped of the title when the facts come out!!!! He said something like
"go back to Africa, you don't belong to Europe". Very few people know that Zidane has African
background but he has! He responded spontenously without thinking of the consequences because he
is NOT used to receiving racial slurrs.... he really looks white!
The Italian goalkeeper actually said something to that effect to Thierry Henry PRIOR to this
incident (holding Henry around the shoulder to make sure he hears), but Henry just replied "****
YOU!" without taking any physical action. Henry is noticably black so he is used to this as a
professional player, and he responded appropriately.
Notice that when the Zidane case happened it was the Italian goalkeeper who allerted the referee.
This tells you it was a pre-planned and pre-meditated phsycological and racial tactics that the
Italians used against the French to expell a French player and consequently win this
Championship. FIFA is fighting a fierce battle right now against racism in football so I'm
absolutely convinced that when the facts come out, Italy will be stripped of the title!
Finally, this should be a lesson to African players. If they ever want to win this cup they
should be prepared to receive racial slurrs on the field without taking physical action.

the Italian guy insulted zidane as Muslim and Arab. it was all related to racism. that is a shame. for an Italian to do such a thing.zidane had the right to hit that Italian guy.in addition this was a tactic to throwout a star player and destroy French's team psychologically.

I don't know exactly but i think the italian guy said something really insulting. Zidane can control himself, it must have been something awful

One of the Italian players grabbed his arm and a lot of people say that the Italian player said something to him so he reacted and hit him in the chest with his head....Its a shame that he had to do that and get the red card...

matteazzi kinda held zidan by his arm around his waist. it was just friendly.. then he hit matterazzi's chest with his head.. it was stupid...

I was wondering the same thing. it was so unsporting reaction. Maybe the Italian guy really provoked him, but he shouldn't have finished his career that way...
