Classifications aren't everything... Yes, in the minds of some people, African Americans were only considered part of a human being, but no one can take away your identity and soul. Every person in the world is a whole person, or 5/5th if you want to get into fractions. No one can take that away either, and the power that some of the white americans tried to establish back in the pre-civil war days was cruel and unusual, and went against many things we said in our Constitution and Declaration of Independence. Only recently has the U.S. held to their phrase "Every man is equal". The 2/5th was never truly taken away, so therefore it could have never been given back. They used the 3/5th for voting porposed and it was yet another way to make them feel inferior to the white race.

First, the constitution was Adopted (not amended) in 1787 (not 1779).

Slaves were alway a whole person, even if the constitution did not count them as such for the census.

Since you ask "what 2/5ths of a human being was given back to us?", I assume that you must be at least 141 years old, assuming that you were an infant and a slave in the US at the time of adoption of the 13th Amendment.

There wasn't any 2/5ths to give back to anybody, just a recognition of what existed all along.

With Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. Slavery was made illegal but of course inhumane discrimination continued for another 100 years -
Enter MLK and his Dream because the time again had come for racial oppression to be recognized, dealt with and cease.

Great question. Whites who owned slaves were 1/5 human beings. Many still are 1/5.

That also applied to all people that were not land owners.

Remember renters of any color were in the same boat. So were Indians
