I trust Consumer Reports for objective reliability ratings and they say that Japanese and Korean vehicles are, on average, the most reliable, followed by American which are followed by European. Used to be that American cars were in last place but Detroit has improved a lot in the last decade.

I love German cars, and owned a modified 2001 Audi S4 Avant for years. German cars are some of the most fun to drive and Audi interiors are second to none. In fact, Consumer Reports often puts VW/Audi cars at the top of their recommendations, in spite of the fact that their reliability isn't as good.

As with most cars, regular servicing by a recommended dealer is the solution. Unfortunately this IS expensive so people skip this resulting in breakdowns. Every car I have owned since I was 16 has NEVER broken down ( I have had some Bad ones) but I always get them serviced regularly. Audi is no different than any other. Before you buy one make sure it has FSH (full Service History) and when it comes to a service, get it done, so that you can be sure it is in good working order.. Plus when you sell it on it will be worth more than the average Audi.

I don't know who you spoke to but that's a load of rubbish. Seeing as they are made by the Germans, they are well put together, incredibly reliable and resist depreciation very well. Try www.parkers.co.uk and look at the reviews for any Audi model, none of them will rate the Audi any less than brilliant in the reliability department.

I'm not sure about Audi's after care, such as customer service, servicing costs etc

BAH. It's blasphemy I say. You are breaking my heart guys. American muscle is great. I'd own a 60's, 70's GTO any day. Asian cars are known for their reliability. BUT, if you love German engineering, or you are handy, or want to learn to be handy. you can own an Audi witha very little maintenance. I own 2 with over 200k miles and I'm buying a 3rd with 145k on it. They have had their bad days but what car hasnt broken down. I would seriously consider buying one. especially a 5 cylinder. Unfortunately they stopped making it in 92 or 93 . The 3rd one I'm buying is from an Audi mechanic. He told me to stay away from the 1.8 turbo. that the only complaint. email me if you want help picking one.
PS. i would personally go with a stick trans

I had one and I had quite a few issues with it however I loved it so much I would probably buy another one. They are vehicles you can't help but fall in love with. Next time, I will lease a brand new one. Audi covers maintenance until 36k so you just put gas in it and drive it. If you buy a used one, make sure the owner followed his maintenance schedule RELIGIOUSLY and has reciepts to prove it. You do the same if you buy one... watch out for the 90k mile tune-up on an A4.... 1800 bucks!

Audis break a lot, it's true. My friend owns a Porsche--Audi repair shop and he verifies. They are also very expensive cars to repair.

If you want an Audi, buy one with full warranty and sell it the minute the warranty runs out.

No. worked for them for years. they rarely leave you on the side of the road in fact most audi's come in for service and have trim problems. other things to watch for are window regulator breaking dash display missing lines in digital display. oil leak on cam shaft tensioner gasket on the v-6 bi-turbo model. and not changing the oil on 4 cylinder turbo models, it has to be changed every 5000 miles even though audi said they can go 10,000 miles between oil changes. I have rebuilt many 4 cylinder turbo engines because of lack of oil changes. all in all very very reliable vehicles.

It certianly is NOT true. Our audi now has over 225,000 miles on the clock (100 2.5 TDI) and it's going strong - and it hasnt even had an engine rebuild yet.

Buy one!
