That depends on how you define "popular". If you mean in the charts and such, then it is because of who actually buys singles / downloads, which seems to be mainly impressionable teenagers who will buy what is supposed to be "cool" at the moment.
Decent bands build up a following by playing gigs and selling vinyls and giving free downloads, and then selling albums. They don't seem to do as well in the charts and such because they are out there working and practicing rather than having loads of money pumped into promotion by companies who don't care about producing decent music, they just care about profits.

It's easier to manufacture a moron - so many of the "artists" are more than half way there already. If Brittany (Britney, Brittney?) & Paris can be "singers", well, heck, I think that's the third sign of the apocalypse.

user guitargadfly got it right. i for one dont listen to these morons. i listen to real musicians, like children of bodom and dimmu borgir. those guys spent years in conservatories studying to become great musicians
