Evolutionists believe the boobs are the result of mankind being descended from the dolphins. The shape and angle suggests that at one time off spring suckled on the breast while still under water and in motion.
As for the mammory glands themselves, they do get swollen and filled with milk while the mother is breast feeding and then go back in size once the breast feeding ends. That is because those glands are draining minerals from the mother's body that if she is not feeding a baby are better served in her own body. Waste not what not.
As for when the glands reduce, that depends on when the mother stops nursing. Some women practice wet nursing long after their baby could move on to other food. For those women the boobs stay swollen, and with breast pumps these days, who knows how long they could keep this practice up.
And for argument sake, what says that the mammory glands aren't there in part to assist the ovaries in maintaining estrogen levels in the female body? I believe that is their other purpose. When you get pregnant the estrogen levels in your body rise and your breasts harden. When you get older and menopause sets in your breasts begin to reduce as your estrogen levels decrease.
Eventually you may need hormone replacement. But given this argument, your breast are there to preserve your sexual identity as well as to allow you to nurse your young.
Just a couple of thoughts.

Early humans often continued breeding even though the female had a child. Therefore quite often breast feeding was a continuous thing. Why spend energy continually regrowing breasts when they can be there permanently.
A lot of scientists believe breasts evolved to attract males because human females to not show many signs of ovulation, which would have been vital in the past. Sorry to disappoint you but they are a sexual tool that attracts men to a female partner. It's not stupid, it's just a way evolution has helped the human race procreate. There are of course other apsects of the body which attract males, but breasts are a definate mark of femininity.
Other scientists believe that breasts evolved to a) comfort the young and b) to prevent them suffocating when feeding.

Very smart question. Did you know that humans are the only primates whose female's breasts remain enlarged whether or not they are pregnant or have just given birth? At other times, they shrink down and are barely noticeable.
I read somewhere that it's an evolutionary thing. Breasts do turn men on, but they also advertise the potential maternity of the woman. Enlarged breasts advertise her ability to nurse babies. After a thousand generations, that sort of natural selection is going to have an effect.

I think they are there to make men feel better during sex. They return to innocence and to mom's breast when they are kissing your boobs, Hun!!!
Yummy, it must be soo good, just like when they were babies - ancient memories revived!
No-no... they are not to entice a man to have sx..... but they surely help men feel damm good. I am not a man, but I am sure that they feel much better if they see boobs on us, as they saw boobs on their mother. :-)
By the way, boobs store fat and water, too... and I think they also strore some hormons to balance out your body between the two periods... don't know..... mine keep changing size and shape regularly, each month - soo, you cannot say they are totally useless before and after pregnancy.
Just make peace with them and buy some nice bras to pack them nicely, dear!
;-)

Hmm. Just to let those of you who say "breasts are there to entice men" know, out of men interviewed from 129 countries, only 13 countries said that breasts are sexual. Most cultures don't consider breasts sexual in any way. Sorry to disappoint you. As for the rest of the question, our mammary glands don't work the same as other mammals, even lesser primates. Because of how our bodies are formed, our mammaries can't expand and reduce. They fill with milk and it makes them appear bigger, sure, but they have to *be* there to produce milk.

I'm pretty sure that there is some activity with a woman's breast in the later stages of pregnancy and after birth especially if she breast feeds her child.Although this activity subsides after the baby is weaned.

They are also there to provide a "pillow" for the baby when you hold it. They act as a comfort cushion type thing for them.
Plus I guess they have to be there all the time because they contain milk producing equipment which cannot be disposed of an regrown at will.
