He's always been kind of a dirty player - he's done this before - he steped on someone's neck once!. But maybe Materazzi deserved it. Zidane was probably sore and tired and knew he wasn't much good to his team anyway, so it wasn't that big of a risk - he thought it was a good idea. Plus he almost got away with it. But I'm glad they threw him out.

If Materrazzi said some sort of racial slur to Zidane, well of course that's wrong, but Zidane is a professional footballer. And he knows what the stakes are in the World Cup final. For him to physically assault another player is ridiculous. I really can't believe anyone is even surprised. He's done this kind of thing several times before. And the fact that he would do it during his last game, the World Cup final, at one of the most crucial points of the match, just further goes to show you how much of a selfish, spoiled brat he really is. It's sad that so many French people's hopes and dreams have been crushed because this prick couldn't control himself for 20 more mins. I guess it's better to burn out than to fade away.

Zinedine Zidane's agent says the France captain headbutted Marco Materazzi in Sunday's World Cup final because the Italian made a "very serious" comment.
Zidane appeared to react to something that was said and was dismissed for his violent charge into his opponent.

I think Materazzi just said something so bad that made Zidane loose it. I hope we get down to what really happened. But, It is unimaginable for anyone to get that mad and strike the opposite player. Remember, Zidane used to play in Italy. So it could have been bad what he sad to him.
Zizou is still my Favorite Player no matter what happened.

Haha... Italy will be stripped of the title when the facts come out!!!! He said something like
"go back to Africa, you don't belong to Europe". Very few people know that Zidane has African
background but he has! He responded spontenously without thinking of the consequences because he
is NOT used to receiving racial slurrs.... he really looks white!
The Italian goalkeeper actually said something to that effect to Thierry Henry PRIOR to this
incident (holding Henry around the shoulder to make sure he hears), but Henry just replied "****
YOU!" without taking any physical action. Henry is noticably black so he is used to this as a
professional player, and he responded appropriately.
Notice that when the Zidane case happened it was the Italian goalkeeper who allerted the referee.
This tells you it was a pre-planned and pre-meditated phsycological and racial tactics that the
Italians used against the French to expell a French player and consequently win this
Championship. FIFA is fighting a fierce battle right now against racism in football so I'm
absolutely convinced that when the facts come out, Italy will be stripped of the title!
Finally, this should be a lesson to African players. If they ever want to win this cup they
should be prepared to receive racial slurrs on the field without taking physical action.

OK, here is the answer. The BBC got an Italian lip reader to check out what was said to Zidane.
M: Grabs Zidane's nipple.
Zidane says something.
M: No. Calm down, liar. I wish an ugly death to you and all your family. [Z's mother was seriously ill]
M: Go f u c k yourself.
Z turns round and knocks M to the ground. With his head.

I'm guessing he called him something pretty bad (to the effect of what one person here mentioned). They probably said something about Africans, or something about Arabs... one or the other for sure. In fact, the Guardian just ran an article stating that some are saying he called him a terrorist.... I'm not sure who actually read the lips, or saw it, but I'd be curious to find out if this is true.
