We had a Pastor appreciation day sometime ago and several people worked for months making a scrapbook of his years as pastor at our church. We had a wonderful dinner after the service and also had took up a collection for a weekend away for he and his wife. He never takes a Sunday off so this was a real treat for him and his wife. We love our preacher, he is the best. We are a small church in western NC. Hope this gives you some ideas.

Let me tell you from expirence that it's a lot of hard work. At my church, the deacons, reverends and matrons of the church are the major players. You want to invite another church to celebrate the event because all pastor, regardless of any church that you worship in, work together. Have the choirs (male, female and children choirs) sing songs that are the particular favorites of the pastor. You want to also have enough seating at your church. When you invite another church to worship at your church and participate in the program, you need enough seating. Do you plan on serving a meal? Get a head count of how many people will be eating after the program. (That also includes the other worshipping church). I think that my favorite is for a skit to be performed by the youth. Pick a scripture from the bible and turn it into a play. That is fun for the youth to participate in. You might want to get the pastor a gift that is from the church. The reverends, the deacons and the matrons also have to get the pastor a gift. ( You don't have to, but it would be nice.) There is a lot of work to be involved in the anniversary day of the pastor. You might want to come up with a theme. You choose a theme every year so that you are not doing the same thing over and over again. I hope that I helped you in a way. Let me know how it goes.

We are a small church so we asked people to donate food for the meal after the program. We did a full program including a funny skit about the pastor, had people say things about the pastor (it mostly ended up being funny), and took up a donation for him. We held our in our fellowship hall in the basement. Hope this helps.
