What type of prep will I need to do? The fan is white and I would like to change it to a brushed silver color for a teens room.

You would need to completely remove the white or do a rough sanding so the paint will stick. Use a metal primer and then silver paint and yes you can spray both. OR do like the shows on tv and just paint over the white! You will need to take it apart some and/or tape over the part that don't get painted. Have fun!

Turn the fan onto the highest setting then just take your brush dripping with paint and have at it. It may become a little messy. Or could do it this way. Unscrew the blades and labell the blades and the fan the same matching numbers in order. Buy a small roller and some fine sand paper also spray paint would be easier. Give them a light sanding. Paint let dry. Then install them where each blade was removed.

There is a product to paint on bisque ware-- fired plain ceramic-- it is made just for the look of old metal-- check out some ceramic hobby folks. The problem I see is getting the blades clean enough for paint to adhere-- I would take the holders for the blades off-- hang the blades after they are clean on the clothesline and spray paint them-- the holders and the metal cover of the moter can be then painted with the above paint. I don't think you want to spray paint the motor housing.
Wish you luck

wood or plastic? plastic...just clean it well and paint away
wood,,i'd do a light sanding to remove the old varnish and let it absorb the paint better
