Yes, but there are a few statements that need to be made.
1. Magnesium burns very fast and will burn out on its own without you needing to put it out. Let it burn out.
2. Use the fire extinguisher to prevent the fire from spreading.
3. If you do try to put it out, do NOT spray directly on the magnesium... you will spread the flames rather than put them out.

No, burning magnesium is dangerous but spectacular. I would suggest using small pieces of it for demos. A classmate once burned some left over shavings from shop class and nearly burned down a telephone pole. MIT students put a large piece into the Welleslet bon fire and scared everyone.

It's possible to live. You might have full-body burns, but you'll live. For the heck of it, I'll say yes, I have. And it hurts. Don't try it at home. Or anywhere.
