They usually have small or big-block v8 engines. The Ford 427, 428 and 351 Cleveland are good examples of the big blocks--but they also produced a pretty powerful 302 small block that was popular in their Mustangs.

Chevrolet is known for their 427, 409 and 502 motors--but they also produce the 350 small block, which is still very popular with hot rodders.

Some muscle cars have v10 or v12 engines, but not many. The Dodge Viper is the only v10-powered semi-muscle car I can think of. The v8 is considered to be one of the strongest and most powerful engines you can use. It's durable and cheap to find parts for.

Muscle Cars always (unless you didnt change it yourself, meaning left it factory or took the big motor out and put something else in) have a big block motor that is a v-8 if your going for more of a bigger muscel car like a muscle truck some had a v-12 high performance engine like the newest corvette and dodge viper have. I own a 396 Big Block and yes it's a v-8 in my 1970 SS El-Camino. So in answer of your question yes there are bigger motors than a v-8

A muscle car, by the strictest definition, is an intermediate sized, performance oriented model, powered by a large V8 engine, at an affordable price. Most of these models were based on "regular" production vehicles. These vehicles are generally not considered muscle cars, even when equipped with large V8s. If there was a high performance version available, it gets the credit, and not the vehicle that it was based on.

Examples: Buick GS, Chevrolete Chevelle SS, Dodge Charger R/T, Ford Torino/Cobra, Plymouth GTX, Plymouth Road Runner, Oldsmobile 442, Pontiac GTO

They have a big V8 engine (which would be a V10 or a V12 by today's standards), many of the classic muscle cars have the big block motors.
