The patriarch, Abraham: claimed as founder by the Jews and Arabs. Major Prophet in all three monotheistic religions. It is ironic that the fighting in the Middle East today is between the children of Abraham.

An earlier answer suggested there is no easy answer, and that does sum it up.

All of those mentioned - Christ, Budda, Newton etc etc -- have some claim. But, opinion will always vary.

There is however, somebody who comes before all those greats, and I'm not talking about God, Allah or whomever.

One answer mentioned the 'caveman', and that is close. But, that should be qualified to say the caveman/woman who first tried to communicate using language. That person was the necessary precusor to all who followed.

Hence, he/she deserves the title of the 'greatest historical figure'.

I won't get into whether the 'greatest' was male or female, but the psychological differences between males and females should give you a clue...

In terms of historical impact, I think you'd have to go with Jesus, Mohammad, and Prince Siddartha (the Buddha). But really, the greatest historical figure depends upon what is important to you. In a thousand years, Yuri Gagarin and Neil Armstrong may be better known than they are now (first to go to space, first to set foot on the moon). For me personally, its Abraham Lincoln. Without him, the United States would not be what it is today, and therefore, the world would be fundamentally different.

The easy answer would be someone of faith like JC, Ghadi, or Budda, but...........There is no real way to answer this question. Most great people had both highs and lows. You also have bias between countries and certain favorites from different historians. In my opinoin, the greatest American would either be... FDR, Thomas Edison, Ben Franklin, or George Washington (sorry Abe fans). They all contibuted differnetly but my pick is FDR!!!!!

Being the most recent..makes this difficult..for the time being ,let us say ,Nelson Mandela...being in the slot for so, so many years could have easily made a political prisoner very bitter with some payback in mind.To come out so positively is beyond me.And then to rally support to the Republic of South Africa. We think we have it tough.

Alexander the Great - conquered most of the known world before he was 30 and was responsible for helping civilize areas of the world that were largely barbaric. How can you not agree that someone who did all that was a great figure?
