steve T, that is exactly what i mean, we should be even. sorry if it came out wrong, but some people hate france and always use the excuse that "Oh well we saved their asses in WWII" but they saved ours in the revolution...so were even. i agree with you, it IS dumb to think that a country "owes" another one

No one ever said anyone owed anyone anything. The Revolutionary war would have taken us longer to win, but there would have been no France for almost 100 years now without our help...
And we helped rebuild Europe after the wars. And Japan.
Heck I think it probably pays a country to go to war with us for what we do afterward...

I don't think France owes the U.S. anything. The U.S. entered WWII to protect it's own interest. We were very isolated from the war until Pearl Harbor. Even then, support for joining the WAR was low in the U.S., many wanted to retaliate against Japan, though.
Common sense tells us that if Germany had won the war in Europe that the U.S. would be Hitler's next target. If all of Europe had fallen, and with Japan having control of all Asia, the U.S. would not have had much hope of winning against an attack. It is that simple. We, like any one else, were looking out for our own interest.
France joined in the American Revolution for the same basic reasons. At the time, they owned a HUGE part of what is the USA today, and quite a bit of Canada. A new(weaker) nation was a safer neighbor than Great Britain. Great Britain was trying to expand it's self through acquiring new territory, and that worried other, established countries.

Your simplistic question begs an understanding. France sent aid and a few natives volunteered to help the US in its REVOLUTION agains the other life long enenmy of France....ENGLAND.
The US entered into the Alliance and with the help of England and Russia and other allies freed France from German occupation after France had surrendured.
I don't know about "owing" but in the strictist since its quite obvious that helping in a Revolution and Spearheading a liberation are not equal as to effort nor "debt".
Read a little history before asking such assinine questions with no relevency whatsoever!

The US does owe France a debt of gratitude for France's support of the rebellion against England. Anyone who dissagrees simply doesn't know their Americans history. France provide, rifles, most of the brittish soldiers only had not very accurate muskets. France also supplied Cannons, gun powder, military advisors and distracted the Brittish navy. The coup of Degrass the French admiral , lead the Brittish admiral Grave on a wild goose chase.
We still use the term coup de grass and grave error as a REMINDER of this. So the french fry really could be described as freedom fries.
Of course they don't teach this on fox news and rush limbaugh, therefore garbage in garbage out.

If there was any paying back to do for the revolutionary war i believe it was repaid by siding with them in 1812 which we never should have done because they were clearly wrong. I don't think it's a matter of paying but you'd expect a little more cooperation out of France than what they've shown in the last few years...hell they didn't even let us fly over their freakin air space to go bomb khadafi. What's aggravating is that two times they rolled over and played dead for the Germans and then criticize us for doing what they seem to lack the nerve to do. I have problems with ALL our so called allies that are constantly criticizing everything we do. Despite what they say we are not a bunch of nazis and I resent the hell out of them acting like we are.
Now that was a real bright comment you made to CAPT. Aren't you a little ashamed for that? Besides..he was right.

France has been an ally of the US longer than any other country. And yes, Great Britain was kicking the US's butt in the Revolutionary War until France stepped in to help us out. Too bad most "Freedom Fry" eaters don't know that.

The whole idea about owing is wrong. The US was one of the many nations that helped liberate France in '44, they were far from alone. If you look up liberate in a dictionary you will find it means: to set free. If you send an army and want that country to do what you want it to it's called occupation, not liberation.
