OK, most courses, not all. And I did mention air and boat racing also, not just car racing.

it isn't always, f1 and road courses take right turns.......u.s. and canada take left turns because that puts the passenger side of the car on the same side as the wall so if there is contact the likelihood of the driver being seriously injured is minimized.

It isn't true that all race tracks run in a counterclockwise direction. All but three tracks on the F1 circuit (Imola, Interlagos and Istanbul) are in clockwise formation as are most, if not all road courses in the U.S.
I believe your question should be modified to ask why oval racetracks run in a counterclockwise direction.

As many have pointed out not all are CCW. I don't know why most are CW, probably KBiz is closest as far as a North American explanation. However, lots of premiere road courses in NA are clockwise: Sebring, Road Atlanta, Road America, Lime Rock, Watkins Glen, Mid Ohio ... just to name a few. In fact Laguna Seca is one of the few that comes to mind as CCW. Perhaps the "only clockwise" notion comes from watching too much NASCAR and IRL. ;)jk

It isn't ALWAYS, but it is most of the time. My guess is that it comes from the Indy 500, which is counter-clockwise and has been since 1911. I think that race designers just like to keep it that way.

safety. if they go in opposite directions it would be messy. not all car races are counterclockwise. boating rule on most lakes is counterclockwise so that people don't hit each other. don't know about planes though.

Why would you want to turn right if you are sitting on the left side? You can visualize the turn in an oval much easier if you are driving from the same side
