I preferred the old ABC Battlestar Galactica where Starbuck is a man and not a woman. The battle were not as spectacular than the Sci-Fi version but the show had a great plot.

The new one is more about paranoia, political intrigue, the human condition, and such. The special effects are very cutting edge, and some folks like them. Edward James Olmos (the new Adama) is a very conflicted character - sometimes almost a "bad guy" in his actions.
Myself, I liked the old version okay, except for Boxey and his robochimp. But the whole "search for Earth" was pretty cool. And good and evil were right out there ... the big silver guys with the red eyes were "evil" and the guys in kakhi and leather were "good".
In the new one, the goal seems far less focused, and the atmosphere darker. Evil is unrecognized and exists on both sides of the conflict. There are a lot more "gray areas" and the "humanoid cyclons" are just creepy. Some of the humans are more evil than some of the cylons. Too new age for me, really.
But it's a good enough show, if you have been following it. Hard to jump into in the middle, and it's very different from the old Battlestar with Lorne Greene.

The old one was much, much better. The Cylons were machines and looked like it. In the new one, they have supposedly "evolved" and look and act human.
In the original Starbuck was a man and is a woman in the new one and it just doesn't work for me.
In the new one, they use words like "hour" and "minute" and "hell." Come on - if they are out there wherever there is - they wouldn't measure time the same way we do. On the original series time was measured in "centons" and "microns" etc. which seems much more realistic. In addition, would an advanced civilization use the same expressions we use? Highly unlikely.
The new series even has the same form of government with a President, Vice President etc. The original had the Council of 12 which makes more sense. Would an advanced civilization have the same form of government we have with the same titles? Unlikely.
I watch it because there just aren't that many sci-fi series around, but it leaves a lot to be desired although critics love it.

The new one is a whole new concept. There's hardly any comparison to draw. It's all very, serious. It's a sci-fi drama rather than entertainment. One major flaw, as far as I'm concerned, was the decision to have characters swear and use the word 'FRAG!' instead of some other four letter word that also begins with an F. The suspension of disbelief necessary to get into it crumbles completely with every utterance of that pathetic word.
The Cylons do make occasional appearances in a form immediately recognisable from the original series but at the heart of the new version of the plot is that they also exist in an 'evolved' form indistinguishable from humans and many of them don't even know they're not human. Well, I suppose it saved a bit on special effects.

The newer on is better, because the characters are more realistic and believable. Everyone among the humans is hiding a dark secret, the new (female) Starbuck is a complete head-case, and there are brilliant, allegorical storylines about rape, terrorism, 9/11, abortion, etc. The Cylons are more convincing, many of them are indistinguishable from humans (and they're much better at shooting!). The mini-series and 1st proper series are available off the net at reasonable prices.

You know, the old seventies series was a cheap, studio driven Star Wars knock-off. It was filled with all of the latest in special effects, including laser-light shows, synth sounds, blue-screen imagery, reflective costuming, etc., making it way 'over the top' (Hollywood-budget wise), cheesy and...fun! A lot of us appreciated the multi-ethnic cast, complete with background stories and familial relationships (no other sci-fi show had done that since Star Trek).
The new series has all the characters: the ones you love and the ones you hate. It's a streamlined, 'believable' version. More care is taken to add depth to the characters, tone down the effects and make the imagery more organic. And it's boring!
Perhaps it was the times. After Star Wars, we came home to 'Planet of the Apes' (actually not bad), 'Logan's Run' (loved the movie, but the series? He ran, and ran...and ran...), 'Fantastic Voyage' (I think that was what it was called. The characters traveled, from reality plane to reality plane, trying to get home. Kinda like 'Sliders') and 'The Man from Atlantis' (gag!). For us sci-fi fans, Battlestar Galactica was a welcome and refreshing change and, dare I say it, 'disco'! What other sci-fi series had a soundtrack you could dance to? (I would love to have gone to a party on THAT set!) And they took Lorne Greene off the range and put him in space?-priceless.

I saw one of the new ones and felt that I was not missing anything. The Old Battlestar Galactica is now funny when I watch it, but at the time it came out was a good show that was fun for a young kid to watch. The new one can just be forgotten.

New. Don't get me wrong; I enjoy both. But they just showed all the old ones on Bravo in the UK, one a day, and I watched them all... it was one of those things that seem like a good idea until you actually try to do it. Like only eating ice cream and nothing else; you think it'll be great and it turns out after a while you start to see all the things that aren't so great about ice cream, and just want to eat a salad. Old BSG made my brain go fuzzy, it was so camp and lacking in common sense (oh no! Our civilisation's been destroyed! Let's go to the casino planet!) and so very fond of beige velour. So I say new; but I do still have a soft spot for old. In moderation.

The old Cylons were better, its interesting the way they have introduced females into the old roles.
The storylines are more gripping in the new series.
And there is more eye candy.
Definately the newer series.

The pilot for the new version was fantastic.
Season 1 of the series was good, season 2 started well but I felt they were padding out the story a lot in the middle just because they had signed up for 20 episodes.
Still, it is well worth watching.
