All weight-bearing exercise will help with bone density loss. But if you have pain in your hips, I'd recommend walking to start with. Stair-climbing, dancing, jogging, etc. are also weight-bearing exercises. Essentially, anything where you are on your feet and your legs are carrying the brunt of your weight.

Elliptical machines are great. I am 24 and have severe disk degenerative disease in all of my lower lumbars. Ellipticals dont put pressure on your joints, and they help build up your muscles so that your body holds itself together better. No exercise creates bone. You need to be taking a vitamin supplement with calcium and vitamin D (allows your body to absorb the calcium). But too much is bad as is with any vitamin. Also, your body will only absorb a percentage of the calcium and D. I have a calcium deficiency...which helps my bones deteriorate. So i take a bit of calcium when i wake and when i go to bed. Better than all at one time cause your body absorbs it this way.
