I realize some restaurants tell the employees to ask this question BUT I think it can be ask differently not to convey the fact they think something is wrong..I always ask "how is everything?,this opens up for any yhing they may need or want or comments..it does not make them think some thing is wrong,as it sounds when u ask does your taste ok...

i'm a waitress part time and i can see what exactly you mean. Personally i would never ask that when i do a check back i ask them "hows everything ok" if theres a problem i want my customers to let me know so that i can fix it. asking if it TASTES OK looks really bad on the server, the cook and the resturant. I totally agree with you and think the same way.

I have worked for restaurants for over 5 years. I started as a server and will say that it is the server's responsibility to insure that everything goes as smoothly as possible. People have a tendancy to hold it in when something is wrong. But, if they are asked they are more likely to say. Although there are better ways of asking. Just be glad that they care, it shows that they care about quality, they want you to have the best food possible.
I would say that if they didn't ask, that would be bad service. Have you ever had a problem at a restaurant and not been able to find your server. It's a pain in the ***. That is bad service.

I agree. You should never say "is everything okay or allright" that implies okay and allright food and service. I always would wait until the diner did not have a mouthful of food and would ask "how is everything?". The others are right about people not complaining until theyre done. Most people act like servers are not human, dont have feelings, and are their personal slaves and whipping boys. I think all people should have to work as a server for a week in high school to see what its like. Its not easy trying to be an amateur psychologist, people reader, personal whatever and and and I could go on for hours. You weiners need to stop nitpicking servers and act like it was your mother, son, aunt or whatever waiting on you and act accordingly.

In all honesty, it's their way of making sure they didn't mess up your order or the cook didn't screw up the way you wanted your steak. I always preferred keeping an eye on the table after the food was delivered and observing the way the diners approached their meal. If they didn't make faces or retched or anything, I'd wait until it was time to refill their glasses and ask if they were enjoying their meal. Never, never to someone with a full mouth! Management does expect it's waitstaff to ensure a diner's satisfaction, but not with stupid questions. It would be worse if it weren't right and no one bothered to check.

As a waiter I ask "is everything done to your liking?"because it covers the foods' taste, it's temperature while it also covers their drinks, (too strong/weak, not enough ice or I need more water). I might have taken away their dinner fork with the salad. I could have given the lady that ordered the Chicken Marsala the Chicken Picata by mistake. The main reason we ask this seemingly stupid question is too cover our a**es in case we made a mistake. After all, our livelihood (tip$) is ridding on you being happy....
- Thanks for asking though.......

WOW people are so nasty here to servers.........The reason we ask is because if we dont do a 5 minute check you darn people will eat half the food and then complain that theres something wrong with it just to get out of paying for it. We also do it to make sure that the temp on meats are correct and for your dining pleasure. If the server didnt check with you you would complain and say it was bad service..............as for them doing it when your mouth is full........stop shoveling it in when you see her approaching the table.......show a little bit of respect and give her your attention.

I wait tables, and personally, I ask because I want to know. Maybe there's chicken in your quesadilla by accident and you only wanted cheese. I'm not going to open up your food beforehand to make sure, I'm going to let you taste it first. Maybe you don't like bagged salad and you just realized that's what we have when you took a bite. I ask so I can fix it and you end up happy, not to piss you off or just to boost my tips. Trust me, hardly anything I do is going to boost my tip from most people-- they come in already knowing how much percent or how many dollars they're going to tip, and the scale can only slide lower during their visit, never higher.

They ask because they're told to ask. Questions of timing aside, the REAL problem is that they couldn't care less about your reply! They ask the way most people ask "How are you?," meaning they expect you to say "fine," and be done with it, so they can get on with their evening. Try saying, "well, actually . . ." once in a while, and you will see the stricken look on their faces.

Because the waitress want to get a good tip. He/She thinks that if she try to be nice to people they will get good tip. Sometimes it is not very nice to ask or interrupt people while they are eating. Just make sure people get what they order.

More than that I despise waiters that ask, " What can I get for you guys?" Especially when they can see that we are women, not guys. "You guys" is not a catch all phrase for patrons of a restaurant. I give smaller tips the minute this phrase leaves a servers lips.
