Just a small note. A lot of answers state that Zinedine Zidane is Algerian and/or was born in Algeria. I wouldn't suggest for a second that Zidane is not Algerian if he considers himself Algerian but it must be remembered that he is also French and was born in Marseille in France. It wouldn't matter to me if he was born elsewhere but my love of Zizou is all the greater due to his Phocéen origins.

Ok, Fifa have taken action and banned Zinedine Zidane for three matches (?) (which he'll serve by doing "community service") and Marco Matarazzi for two.

Fifa also claimed that "In their statements, both players stressed that Materazzi's comments had been defamatory but not of a racist nature." Why would Fifa go out of their way to point out what Materazzi had NOT said? I can't say what I think for legal reasons but this all seems a bit strange as there's been a lot of reports to the contrary, possibly even supported by Zidane's brother. Can there be so much smoke without Marco Materazzi being a *****t c***?

I don't have a clue and it really doesn't matter. However, whatever Zinedine Zidane did to Marco Materazzi was perfectly in-line because it take an action to create a reaction. So Marco Materazzi really had to provoke Zinedine Zidane. With all due respect with this fair play stuffed, the referee was wrong on his decision since he did not witness the incident and also Buffon should have been pressure to reveal what was said to Zinedine Zidane by Marco Materazzi before a decision should had happened since he was the fussier in the whole thing. The referee should have either given both of the players a yellow card or have both of them shake hands. People need to be accountable for their actions and that include Marco Materazzi. This is what happened in the whole world everyday, people being bullying and teasing around and the expectation from the victims is to do nothing and that is very wrong. We need to tell guy like Marco Materazzi that his behavior is not acceptable. The reactioner in this case Zinedine Zidane got punished and was robbed the perfect ending of his career with a red card he did not deserved.

Everyone is saying Materazzi must have said something terrible because Zidane is such a great player he wouldn't have reacted that way otherwise. Well 5 years ago he did the same thing - he butted another player during a game for Juventus and got suspended. In the 1998 World Cup he stepped on the back of Saudi player and got suspended for 2 games.

Zidane is a hothead, and nothing excuses his barbaric reaction. Even if it was a racist mark (which would be a terrible thing for Materazzi to say), that's a terrible way to react in any game, let alone with 10 minutes left in overtime of the World Cup Final.

Zidane was a complete idiot.

Whatever he said to Zidane doesn't matter, it doesn't excuse Zidane's barbaric reaction. Did he realize that he was on a soccer field or did he think he was playing tackle football? For anyone who knows anything about sports, comments are always made on the field, I've never seen anyone react that way. I don't understand why the FIFA is investigating what Materazzi said, I didn't see anyone investigating Poulsen when he instigated Totti. Totti reacted by spitting and he was disqualified for several games and rightfully so. Now Zidane does it and he's a MARTYR, he was WRONGED???? Give me a break, headbutting is his trademark, please get informed before making unnecessary comments.
Also, he should NEVER have received golden ball, not before and definitely not after this incident. The only reason he got it was because his career was ending. He definitely didn't deserve it, the only thing he was good at is penalties since those are the only goals that France was able to score and those are the same goals that bit them in the A** in the end.
So I say that no matter what Materazzi said, ITALY WON AND THEY ARE THE WORLD CHAMPIONS, WHY DON'T WE CONCENTRATE ON THAT INSTEAD OF STUPIDITIES!

It is not for us to speculate what was said. Zidane may inform us of what he claims was said at a later time. Obviously Mr. Materazzi will refute it.
The important point here is the blame culture which has blown up around it. Materazzi is seen to twist the nipple of Zidane before anything is said. This is gamesmanship - something referees were told to clamp down on. Then there were words exchanged before the retaliation.
It has been reported that Zidane may lose the Golden Ball award. I think that if blame is to be apportioned then at least make it fair. Materazzi, as the instigator, should lose his winners medal also.
I wonder how the governing bodies view this idea.

They've said on the news that Materazzi first insulted zidane's mom and the Islam.. and then he supposly said va fanculo ( go screw urself in italien or wtv dont kno how to write it) and zidane didnt take it..
I wasnt either on Italy's side nor French since I wanted my country to win ( Germany) but I really think that when it comes to racism no one has a right to insult someone. were all different.. and this is so bad that the Italian player acted this way since The FifaWorldcup is associated with the thing for anti-racism in the world..
First i didnt understood why he acted this way then I thought he must of have a really good reason to do this since he is a very pacific person.. he never takes his head for anything stupid.. Someone makes him fall on the filed he gets up and dont complain like the Italians and other teams and fake during 5 minutes.. Way before the Italians won the cup, i read 1 week before in the journal that italian players were known as the best actors in soccer... and the game between italy and France prooved it right.. Ne way that is not the subject.. just to say that Zidane would of never done this just for the fun of it..
Zidane did what he had to do. If you think that Materazzi had a right to do this then Zidane had more right to attact him like that..

From the Start, it is reported, Marco Materazzi was busy winding up Zidane by his inappropriate insulting words & deeds. He took the shirt of Zidane & reportedly felt his nipples. Zidane was all along in a good humor & asked him to keep it as a Souvenir after the match. Materazzi is reported to have asked Zidane to keep it for his (prostitute) sister.

During the minutes after that, we saw, Zidane walking past Metrazzi casting a disdainful look. Then, Matrazzi had spoken highly offensive & dirty which made Zidane return,& charge like a bull headbutting Matrazzi on his chest & knocking him off.

There are news reports saying, Materazzi called him a 'Dirty Terrorist' & Materazzi flatly denied having said anything like that & he didn't know what that word meant. (Can you believe this?)

As per the account of the Britain's Top Forensic Lip Rader Jessica Rees, based on Metrazzi's lip movement , he must have said, 'Just F*** off for good measure, the son of a TERRORIST WHORE'.

Anyhow, we've to wait for confirmation from the Horse's (Zidane's) Mouth!

I feel the Italian Player needs to be punished barring him from the game for life, had it been proved he used any racial or sexual gutter language on Zidane. The whole world will stand by Zidane if Materazzi is at fault.

I liked the INSTANT Justice meted out by Zidane, the Valliant My respect for him grew exponentially. Heading, punching the nose etc etc are too common in football matches. It has become a part of the game!

I read a report by Fifa saying that Materazzi insult a member of Zidane family and told him that he is a duty terrorist, I think any body will react the same. I think Fifa need to fine or take out Materazzi for the next World Cup. Materazzi is a racist, that was him that should be out not Zidane.

I agree it must of been something very awful said to zidane, but the only excuse for an assault of that nature would of been in self defense, which in this case did not exist! What Zidane should had done was notify the Ref. of Materazzis' taunting (if existed), and I'm sure he would had done something about it. Zidane was up to Sunday, one of the most decorated and positively commented player of the 2006 World Cup, and he blew away any further recognitions with a bone head move like that. It is certain that we'll all missed a great player with a sensation luxurous style, but his mistake must be dicipline by Fifa and set as an example!

Materazzi called Zidane a terrorist... and apparently commented on zidane french algerian moslem roots. A touchy topic at any point but even more upsetting in view of the current political situation. Poor Zidane! After being a thorough gentleman throughout the tournament... to be remembered as someone who was red carded is so unfair! But that's life... and in football as in life... the best do not always win. We all know who the football legends are and no... they were not wearing blue yesterday.
