Cristobal Colon (Columbus) was given three ships: Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria.
Nina never made it out of port. Pinta and Santa Maria arrived in the West Indies. Santa Maria alone returned to Europe.

I presume that you are referring to his first voyage (1492-1493). There were three ships in the voyage. Columbus was in overall command and captain of the Santa Maria. A pair of brothers, the Pinzons, each captained the other two ships, the Nina and the Pinta.
On 24 or 25 December 1492, the Santa Maria crashed into one of the islands, making it unseaworthy. The wood and other materials from the Santa Maria were used to construct a fort for some of the men that would stay behind in the New World. They called the fort Navidad (Christmas). When the other two ships returned to Spain the following spring, Columbus was captain of the Nina.
As an added bit of information, when Columbus returned on his second voyage (a convoy of 17 ships), they found the Navidad fort to be abandoned with no trace of the men stationed there.

He had three originally....The Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. They've been pounding that into my head since kindergarten, since my country was rediscovered and named by Columbus.
