I have read a large variety of books. Things I have really enjoyed are Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead. I also recently read a book, Marley and Me that I loved. I have read a lot of Dean Koontz and Stephen King and like them both. I enjoy a lot of the classics (Dostoyevsky, the Brontes, etc.). I am looking for a modern fiction writer that you think I would enjoy. I am quite bad at keeping up on modern writers and I am looking for some fresh reading material. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Clive Barker has an interesting variety of stories. His first books were straight horror fiction, then his later works were more imaginative fantasy. Every book has a different tone, as if each one comes from a different place in the writter. So, far my favorites were Imagica and The Thief of Always.

Neil Gaiman is a good story-teller with a quirky sense of humor. I enjoyed Good Omens very much.

Try Anne Tyler's Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant. It's about a dysfunctional family (aren't they all?). The older brother is driven by jealousy and resentment, the younger brother just wants the family to sit down to dinner together, and the sister is dealing with her own internal damage.

Tyler won the Pulitzer for a later novel (Breathing Lessons),and sold a gazillion copies of another novel (The Accidental Tourist) but this was her best novel, in my opinion.

Her newest novel, Digging to America is out in hardback right now.

I enjoy Sarah Dessen. She has written a variety of books about teenage life. My favorite, at the moment, is The Truth About Forever, it is about a young girl coping with her father's death and struggling to really find a voice and just be herself--not who her mom wants her to be, not who her boyfriend expects her to be, etc. She just wants to be. She's seeking her own voice and her independence. It's a great read :)

The Uglies trilogy by Scott Westerfeld is very interesting. The novels are set in a futuristic society which on the surface looks perfect--everyone is beautiful, happy, and carefree...but underneath the surface lies a dangerous secret. Tally and her friends seem to stay in the center of untangling this secret and fixing the problems that threaten her world.

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer is another great read. Yet another YA writer. Bella Swan may seem like an ordinary teenager...but her world is turned upside down when her new boyfriend turns out to be a vampire.

And my favorite adult writer is Orson Scott Card. His most famous novel is Ender's Game, although he has written many novels. (Mostly science fiction and fantasy). His website allows you to read one to five chapters of any of his books.

Jonathan Safran Foer's Everything is Illuminated by far. and I'd go with the Sloppy Firsts/Second Helpings/Charmed Thirds trilogy too...kind of teen-angsty but great comedy about high school which you can relate to. and if you haven't read Anthem by Ayn Rand, I just read it a couple weeks ago, and it was really great.
