You could take a painter's palette (they make them very large) or take a chef's cutting board and cut it into a funky shape. You could also use a chessboard and anchor that down. You could tile a table with broken left over tiles (very cheap to do) and just buy a piece of thick glass to perch on top. Perhaps just a slab of granite (you can find lots of remnants of these at tile and countertop stores). Good luck!

Get PVC from Lowes or a hardware store. It is like a heavy plastic and you screw the pieces together. The store will cut the pieces for you and also make sure that you get all of the elbow joints and the right glue to use. Practice puttting it together before you start gluing or you might use the wrong part and it will be glued tight. PVC is great. It is light weight but strong, can be any size you need, and paints well so you match your other furniture or do it silver for an industrial look. Use a sheet of plywood to cover the top and screw it into place. Sand, stain or paint it. Or you could get lamenated wood so it will be less work.(sometimes you can get it in the scrap or leftover box at a discount)The top would have a smoother surface also. Figure if you want it with an upper back cabinet, drawers or shelves and then get busy. If making drawers and shelves seem too hard try using plastic milk carton boxes hung on the wall above or beside the desk to hold papers and supplies. Remember to do a light sanding and the paint will stick better to the pvc. It will all look nice once you get it all painted to match. You can hang some milk boxes with their bottom on the wall and use it for file folders and others with their side to the wall to hold and hide supplies and clutter. You might get a couple of smaller solid boxes to hold pens clips, etc. For a more traditional look go to a thrift shop(any budget can work there) for a coffee table, end table, or night stand and then change the legs (buy screw on ones at Lowes) to longer ones so you will be able to put your own legs under it. Use a longer sofa table and cut down the legs if it is too high for sitting and working. With wooden tables you can sand ,stain, paint, or just clean them good and apply a good wood polish if the top is smooth enough to write on and you like their color. You can find good chairs at the thrift shop also. You can change any drawer pulls to match your decor. Have fun!

You want very creative but you don't talk about your needs. In design, form follows function. You have to determine what uses the object is going to serve, then design for that. I'll be glad to give you my input when you have more of an idea about your needs as opposed to your wants.
