Unfortunately, for civilized society, they are a requirement. Evolutionarily
our feet do better on plains, mud, etc. Hard pavement, etc. increase
stress on the skin, muscles and the bones in the foot and leg. Shoes
protect somewhat against these stresses.

A well designed shoe, though pretty ugly, is a savior against a lot of
walking on a rigid, hard surface.

However, in order to make legs appear longer, women's shoe designers
try to make the foot appear as small as possible. We all now have a
definition of "sensible shoe" - which is basically one that is up to a shoe's
primary job of protecting and supporting the feet.

Unfortunately, women buy shoes primarily for aesthetic reasons, not
to perform their primary function. Consequently, the shoe harms the
foot while protecting it (by squeasing the bones together at the
toe and atrophying certain muscles controlling the ankle).

So: Are they overrated? Well, they are necessary. Shoes designed
for aesthetics are highly overrated because if women wear them long
enough, they hobble and waddle and end up appearing unhealthy
otherwise - thereby making the wearer aesthetically less appealing.

Personally, I think the best route is to wear sensible shoes as much as
you can and only bring out the heals when you are trying to appeal
to a SPECIFIC person.

If you are trying to look sexy for everyone, you'll just end up
non-ambulatory.

No! shoes are underrated. I absolutely LOVE shoes. If I had the $$$, I would be the next Imelda Marcos, but unfortunately, just have to pine for the lovely shoes that taunt me in the department stores, in magazines, and on other people's feet!!! :-)

Happy Shoe Shopping Everyone!

Not at all. Now Star Jones is said to have well over 500 and while to me that's ridiculous. I'd settle for 100. They protect your feet and sometimes make or break your outfit, I would hardly call shoes over rated. They are a great assett to have many pairs of. Just maybe not as many as Star Jones has.
