All I can remember about it is it had some wierd goose-like creatures that you controlled, I think one was purple and the other yellow? And something about getting a key too I think. I remember playing this as a kid and can't remember the name for the life of me, although I think it had kind of an odd name.

The name of the game is Joust. In fact I played it about 2 hours ago, great game!

This wasn't an Atari game, but there was an old IBM PC/Apple II game called Gertrude's Secrets way back in the early 80's where you controlled a goose and it played similar to what you describe.

Atari had a game way before called Adventure on the 2600 and Gertrude's Secrets was copied off it.

That sounds like Joust to me. It was originally by Williams Electronics, although I think it was adapted for the Atari game systems.
