We have zoysia in our front yard. Last year, we noticed a spot that was dieing and becoming bare. We "plugged" the area and the plugs are green and growing but has not spread (over the bare patches) like zoysia usually does. Now we have a huge brown dead/bare spot in our front yard, spreading like a fungus. What should we do?

There are two common problems found when growing Zoysia; Brownpatch (disease) and Grubs (insect).

Try digging around in the soil close to the area where there are bare spots and also around those surviving plants close to where the barespots are. The grubs are white and if you find around 4 or more per square foot, I'd recommend you apply a granule insecticide and water it in. There are some fertilizers that come with an insecticide mixed with it.

These granular insecticides work better if you: 1) Irrigate first to get the soil moist, 2) apply the granules and 3) then water again to move the insecticide to where the grubs are.

Although Brownpatch might be the cause, Zoysia is hardy enough and will eventually grow out of it. If you suspect it's Brownpatch, you can find a fungicide that will control it at your local hardware store.

Hope this info was of some help for you. GOOD LUCK!

Well, I'd call a professional. If you lose your lawn to a fungus, its going cost you a bunch to have it redone. If its something nasty, you aren't really going to have the best tools to fight it anyway.

Trying things from the home improvement store might work, but why risk it.
