Practice does not make "perfect."
Practice makes "better."
We practice to become better, to strive for perfection, knowing full well that we are never ever, not in a million billion years, going to achieve it.
Practice is what life is all about.

When one is perfect, they still practice perfection, what else is there to do, something better than perfection? We practice because we love perfection. But, we must agree, that everyone has a different perspective on perfection. Like me, I would say we are in perfection right now, and living our lives is our practice.

We can approach perfection by practicing as much as possible. Theoretically, we can achieve Absolute Perfection by doing Absolute Practice (i.e. for infinity), but that's impossible, so we must do whatever is possible within the time given to us.
For instance, we must practice at life to be better at it. I like to practice at life. I do life. Almost like how I do the dew. Actually, I don't drink Mountain Dew, I just thought that was a catchy phrase.

Because what is perfect now is less then perfect tomorrow. Perfect is a time dependent function not an absolute. If you were your high school class valedictorian, you were perfect for a fleeting instance and then you are just another grunt in collage. But this moment of glory was great.

You are right, there is no need to practice. Actually if a meteor dropped on this planet a second from now and our planet would explode...who cares.
But...all humans are a kind of crazy and within this crazyness they try to "survive" it is somewhere deep in our biological programming. It is something we can not stop.
So the question is the same as why does a tree grow leaves?

The word perfect does not mean 'flawless'; rather, the word perfect means, 'mature'. Maturity is something all of us must strive for. Maturity is not gained through laziness, but through doing things and learning things. Laziness makes a person a lazy fool. Practice and DOING makes a person knowledgeable and wise.

P.S. That is how nobodies are transformed into somebodies: by perfecting practice.
