We drove through Mauritania a few years back while taking part in the Plymouth-Banjul challenge. For me it was the highlight of the drive.
Okay first things first, the poverty is unbelievable but the warmth and hospitality of the people is equally unbelievable .
They really are beautiful and proud .
Food wise we stuck to the fruit and fish.
Communication; No mobile coverage at all from Nouadhibou to the Senegal border, but Internet cafes can be found in Nouakchott along with a very good Chinese restaurant that also sells stubbies of Heineken. Rare in a dry country.
Things to see; we stuck to the coastal route through the national park with a 30 mile beach run driving through the surf trying to beat the tide.
Would I go back ? Hell yes. When are you going and can I come.

I used to smoke a lot of mauritania, man, but I had to give it up because of my job working for the FBI as a secret agent. Oops.
