We recently loaded the dishwasher and went on a week long vacation. We never turned the dishwasher on so the dishes just sat there. We are good about rinsing plates off before we put them in the dishwasher and this dishwasher is part of our new home, so we were wondering...what would have caused mold to get all over one single plate. It was the only tupperware plate in there and we were wondering if it could have been because it was wet.

Leaving it wet and not running it for that lenght of time. Any time you leave any amount of water into something it will get that way. Always before vacation make sure washer, dishwasher and so forth has been dry and no water standing.

mold grows where there is constant moisture and warmth. since the dishwasher is a confined space, it will hold moisture and warmth. and a week is all it takes for mold to grow. especially if the dish was not completely rinsed of large food particles the mold will grow faster. sometimes in less than 12 hours.

run the dishwasher without any dishes and use soap then if that doesnt work your water might have a lot of extra minerals and you might need a different water hook up
