It was something the Italian defender said to him, also, he was probably on the edge physically and felt that the cup was slipping away from him.

Still stupid.

Aye that was a shocker,
Especially as he is a very experienced player, Captain of his Country, playing his last game for his Country and it just so happens to be in the World Cup Final.

ZZ has been in the game long enough to know not to react to any kind of wind up, intimidation by lashing out.
Headbutting an opponent for ANYTHING is out of order.
But it looked as though ZZ reacted to being called a name or similar and for the length of time Zidane has been in the game. I'm sure he's heard EVERY insult going and then some,

He has just put a BIG black mark through a magnificent career.
Let's face it Everyone's gonna remember this for a long long time when they should be remembering ZZ for being 1 of only 4 people to score in 2 World Cup Finals.

He also let down his teammates and left France without their BEST penalty taker when it was odds on that a penalty shootout was going to settle the Final

I saw the whole thing on T.V. There was some jocking around for postition. It seemed like Marco mildly held Zidane & then they broke. At first seemed as if everything was ok. I think Zidane even smiled and was walking the other way when all of a sudden he turned around and head butted Marco in the chest. It was a beautiful head butt as far as head butts go but I was shocked especially since this was the world cup and he was France's Capitian. Why would he throw it all away, no matter what Materazzi said to him. He showed a total lack of control and deserved to get booted. Obviously he did not learn the adage of stick and bones will brake his bones but words will never hurt him, that is if he doesn't let them hurt him.

I HATE ITALY!!!!!!! I HATE ITALy!!!!!!!!!!!
Like the commentator said -- 1st they broke German hearts (sob!) and now French hearts. B's!! I want to yell out a string of abuses but I don't want Y! to kick ME off!!!! Getting Zidane --the player of the DECADE sent off???!!
THOSE CHEATS!!!!!
It must have been something really bad or Zidane wouldn't have head-butted him and gone off and left his team --I didnt even see him come back for his medal!! Poor guy! What an end to an awesome career --He was -(I still want to say 'is')- untouchable. Not 1 foul the whole World Cup. What a guy!!
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT HAPPENED IN THE DRESSING ROOM? Why didn't he come back?
That italian guy should be bashed up! I can't stand these young upstarts who try to upstage legends. Italian Pipsqueak!
Zidane- has his own song, a player with charisma, was supposed to get 'The golden ball' award, supposed to have a movie made after him --and now??? So sad how life has a way that 1 moment can change your whole life. I want to believe that there are 2nd chances, but I just don't know what to think now. When France won against Portugal, all of them were jumping around like lunatics, thrusting around probably worse than Shakira!- but Zidane, such a gentleman to the end, stood his ground, smiling, hugging people. Zidane.. Zezou.. Zezou zeZou ZeZou..la ..la.. I'll sing your song to the end.. zezou... Zezou-Zezou ZEzou.....ZeZOU

Zinedine Zidane did something stupid and only he knows why. Maybe he does not even know. That might be just one of these impulsive things that we all do. Doesn't matter what the Italian player said. Provocations are part of the game. You hit you're out. Period. And I did like Zidane too.

First of all get it right! The name of the great man, Zizou, is Zinedine ZidaNe. But aside from that, I really regret that he held back. Since what was said was so bad, then he shouldn't have held back at all. He should've UNLEASHED his manliness on that wuss who could only talk and not really play. That way at least one player from the Italy side could've gone out also. Knowing Zizou though, I KNOW that what he did is all the meanness that's in him, nothing more. Alas, he will be remembered as one of the greatest, and Marco Materazzi as one of the WORST!

Zidane the king of the worlds beautiful game.He is also a human being of a placid nature, but then if and i think that slimy Italian said something to him. That triggerd off his image as a man, think about it carefully.Slimy Italians,Slimey italians.
Their must be an investigation into the poor mans actions until then dont judge the best player in the modern world.

he did something that ruined his reputation and cost the teams victory. he was talking to an italian guy and zinedine got mad and head-butted the italian guy in his stomach so zinedine was kicked out of the world cup

I would say that it was a mixture of physical exhaustion and the italian said something to him and he lost the plot! yes, he let his team mates down by that action but he will suffer enough knowing that and also have the knowledge that his career ended on a low! I just hope that everyone will remember him as one of the best footballers the world has ever known and not let tonight's act of madness tar his wonderful career in the eyes of the world :-)

Because he needed to show everyone he's not a God, and well that way some people got mad at him and won't miss him that much, so he was doing them a favor, so they won't feel so bad

There's also a rumor that the italian's heart had stopped, and St Zidane was just helping out... lol

I don't care.. I love him anyway...

Because Materazzi made either a comment about Zidane's family or he made a racist comment because of Zidane's algerian muslim background and Zidane was mentally tired and the comment made him lose control. It was a sending off but I also believe that the players that made unprofessional comments like Materazzi did should also be reprimanded.
