Greatness may last a thousand years for a few and eternally for none. On the scale of earthly time, individual lives are but mere blinks of an eye. We're born, we live, we die and then you're not heard from ever again. There might be a tombstone or family tree made with your name on it, but eventually the tombstone weathers from age and who knows what media your family tree will be used. All the memories and accomplishments will be totally forgotten, unless you're a Hitler or Alexander the Great type person.
In a thousand years, your bones will be dust and no other trace of your existence will be seen, unless, of course you become fossilized for some reason, but even then, after thousands of years more, that will be disintegrated into dust. We influence the lives of our children and others, but they too will eventually die. So what's the point of living?
In astronomical terms, the Earth will eventually succumb to the supernova of our Sun, it's an astonomically certainty the earth will be burned to a crisp.
So does death render our lives meaningless. If we were immortal, that would be the ultimate in boredom, repetition, day after day, of doing the same thing for thousands of years (hundreds may be OK, but nothing beyond that)....but i digress, back to your question.

We get this one a lot, we philosophers. Actually, the terms of the question are rather ill-chosen. "Meaning" is a term that is cogent only in relation to some "statement" made by some being, using language or otherwise. To assume that life has meaning is to assume that there is something or someone who MEANS it –Â that is, not only that God created life, but that he created it as a sort of a statement – in essence, to make a point.
So your question is, "If God created life to make a point, what point was he making?" And that's rather like asking the words in your question what the meaning of your question is.

if we knew that, then we would be god [or whatever religion type person you believe in]
but if you really need something to believe in then the meaning of life is whatever you choose to do to make the world better or to help someone. its not the meaning of general life, its the meaning of your life. that's what you have to find out.

Meaning is something YOU create. If you want your life to have meaning, you must create it from the choices and actions you take.
How do you do that? YOU must decide what is valuable. VALUE is what YOU decide is desirable, useful, and good. Now that you know what is valuable, take actions and make decisions that make those values live in your life.
Now you have a meaningful life.

I think by "meaning of life," you intend to ask what the significance or importance is of our existence in this world. Everone, no matter who, has some opportunity to change the world, or at least a small part of it. All we can do is try not to blow it. Your chance is to make your small part as you see fit, which is to say, you can make a statement. Try to make an important and valuable one, ok.

It is exactly, nothing more or nothing less, than what you consider it to be. Every thought, every action you have or make has a direct or indirect influence on every human alive. We as human beings think we are single entities. But in truth, we are all but one life-force trying to exist. Each thought is yours and also millions of others. DO your best to do your part to insure the continued survival of all of us. Only you can decide what that is.

It's different for everyone. The meaning of life is probably that we can't avoid it, so do your best to make it a good one.
