Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) introduces some exhaust gases into the combustion chamber to burn fuel that did not burn completely during the combustion process. It also serves to reduce combustion temperatures, which reduces the formation of nitrides of oxygen (NOx), which is a chemical which contributes to the formation of smog. It also forces the throttle plate in the motor to be opened further to maintain power, reducing pumping losses, which increases the efficiency of the motor.

Exhaust Gas Recirculation - so unburned fuel in the exhaust is returned to the combustion chamber so it can be burned for less pollution and better fuel efficiency
