Like when they trip, or get speeding tickets...

It is totally laughable. This includes family. Once I was hiking with my brother on a trail and there was a log crossing the path. He took off running and jumped over it. Of coarse I thought I had to jump it too ( forget the fact that I'm not as physically fit or as young as him). So I took off and when I jumped it my foot hit the log and down I went. He was laughing so hard he couldn't even help me up. I even skinned up my knee. If he had fallen he would have gotten the same reaction from me.

Trip and nothing happened , OK . But a ticket , well that's where something has happened so , no .I would be mad if a friend laughed at my lost of money , points . The situations vary .If your friend is in anyway hurt , don't laugh .Not in front of them. Or try to want for their reaction first .If they are showing anger , pain , sorrow , just be quiet , don't comment on what just happened .It's fine if it's the tree moved into their way and they walked into it . Or a person at a club gave them the mental health phone number( That really happened) LOL

It's nice to be able to laugh at the little things and see humor in even 'bad' things happening, so I say go for it! Besides, even with speeding tickets, you live and learn-- it's all part of the ferris wheel of life. If you can't take the little things in stride, how will you ever face the big ones?

It is human nature to occasionally feel like that. It is so common that a term has been made for it in the German language, also used in English language to describe it.

Scadenfreude, meaning "pleasure taken from someone else's misfortune".

It is conventionally polite to keep such feelings private, as sharing them with your friend, or with other friends who know your friend, would be rude, inconsiderate and maybe considered to be disloyal.

When I feel that way about someone, I usually just feel glad that whatever happened to them didn't happen to me.

No. it might not be exactly polite, but it's a natural human reaction, as long as it's not vicious. I'll let the psych people explain why but basically, it's why the three stooges are so funny.

I don't think that you should laugh when bad things happen to people especially your friends.

yes it is bad to laugh at them when bad things happen to them because then they will laugh at you and they will think you are not there real friends. They might not even be your friends no more!
