Correct, in theory. Now they serve special interest groups and politcal action commitees that give them nice perks and lots of cash to run again in the next election and keep their large salaries, so long as they vote in favor of these groups.

The way the congress is written is so that the people are represented by represenatives and senators in congress...but i dont know what the hell those people are doing because this country is going under...why do we even have a president if the only thing he can do is veto a law or declare war and even with that he has to ask congress to declare war and they all have to agree...even if he does veto a law, congress can override him...so why the hell do we have a president if the congress has all the damn power

A republic is a state governed by representatives elected by the people.
A democracy is a state in which the people hold the power and there is social equality.

The United States, however, has turned into an egregiously corrupt political system dominated by two parties that have no interest in serving the general public. They fail to represent the people....and, unfortunately, the people fail to do anything about it.

Like live lobsters comfortably languishing in a pot of lukewarm water, we won't start screaming until the water reaches the boiling point. Then we'll be screaming in agony over our own apathy, but it might very well be too late.

Politicians know that as long as we're preoccupied with things like: maxxed-out credit cards; $3.00-a-gallon fuel for our $60,000.00 SUVs; Britney Spears' love life; Jacko's pedophilia; "low prices - everyday" at WalMart on junk we don't even need; professional landscaping for our $300,000 homes; and the latest rankings of our favorite football team, they don't have to change anything. They just continue to suck off the taxpayers' teat, enriching themselves with lavish salaries, all-expense-paid luxury vacations, outlandish cost-of-living pay increases (while refusing to raise the minimum wage), and unimaginable health, medical and retirement benefits - all voted in all by themselves!

Until we get off the couch, put down the remote, and DEMAND our country back, these sleazy lawyers and politicians will keep taking campaign contributions from lobbyists, special interest groups, and big business, favoring legislation that benefits them and gouging the American public.

The Constitution allows us to bear arms against a tyrannical and oppressive government, but we're just "too comfortable" yet to start a second American Revolution. By the time the boiling point is reached, we'll be a two-tiered society with a handful of the very, very rich and (the rest of us) the very, very poor, just as you see in the Dominican Republic and Haiti today.

Then, since the Bush administration has put us TRILLIONS of dollars of debt, our biggest creditor (China) will eventually "max-out" our federal credit card and cut us off. Since there will be no money to amass a military (kind of the same shape Russia's in today), China will simply come over here and help itself to our assets, real estate, natural resources, oil, weapons, and whatever else it wants.

Our generations might not see all that happen, but our grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be living in an entirely different country than we have today. They'll be in an 85% tax bracket, so they'll have to earn $100,000 a year and learn to support their families on $15,000 while our massive federal debt is reduced over decades and decades and decades.

Environmentally, our descendants will enjoy a lesser quality of life because we've squandered most of Earth's resources today and dismantled well-intended laws designed to preserve and protect the delicate ecological balance between human beings, plants, and all other animals. Because we were too lazy to REcycle, REuse, and REturn our plastic, glass, cardboard, newsprint, aluminum, magazines, phone books, steel, asphalt, cooking grease, and styrofoam (it was just SO much easier to let someone haul it all away and dump it in a landfill), this country - and this world - will soon exhaust our ample supplies of natural resources.

Yes, Congress is supposed to "follow" us, but this sitting U.S. Congress (being the most evil, corrupt and incompetent ever to occupy the Capitol Building) plays by its own rules, does what it chooses to do, and snubs it political nose at its constituents - al because its constituents don't give a tinker's damn.

Congress should not follow you. Your representatives, as the name indicates, are supposed to represent your interests locally for reps and statewide for senators. The problem is too many Americans fail to vote for their representatives (30 % is the going rate) and they end up being old white protestant upper class males who neither understand nor represent the typical American.

Once again in theory yes, (Sorry for sounding repetitive) but most of your representative think that by creating jobs they represent you, so the job creators (corporations) give them that, and money and request representation too. So while you don't complain because your representative now created a job for you building bombs the corporations suck 25% of the budget and get tax exemptions created by your representative.
