every city in ancient greece had its special god that protected it. some were said to be founded by, or thanks to, some divinity, that thus was meant to protect the city.
so the temple of this god was very special in the city, though other gods were worshiped aswell.
instead, some mountains or islands were also named after gods. but in this case, the islands and mountains were the personification of the gods (normally they were far away from greece).
