How do I prevent getting stress fractures in BOTH of my hips again? Does icing actually help?

Icing does help some, but it is important that you also stretch and message your areas on a regular basis. Soaking in warm water after a run is good also. But each person is different, if you really want help you will have to talk to a physical therapist. They have the best answers based on, how much you weight, how far you run and how serious you have been injured before.

good shoes are the most important thing to prevent stress fractures. after that is proper form.

go to a store that specializes in running shoes and get your stride analyzed, they will recommend a shoe that matches your stride. good running shoes are not that expensive, you can get decent ones for $50-100. And dont wear them too long, or the cushioning will wear out and its worse than running with no shoes at all. I replace mine every 6 months.
