start > run > cmd ---- ok
type "sfc /scannow"

and if you are using dialup, try to get different modem.
Maybe the modem hung your computer

see what it does for you.

Check your video card settings. Many problems like this are related to the video card or another system device trying to share the same space. Go to control panel, then system, then hardware. Look at the device tab and see if there are any conflicts between devices.

If not, just remove the video drivers, reboot and the computer will reinstall them. Hopefully that solves it.

P.S. If you have dial up it could be that the modem needs set to another IRQ setting or port. Change to an open one.

When I had this problem the NVIA drivers I had were the latest, just one problem, it was BETA which is testware. I restored driver back to an older one and no problems.

Same can happen with any device so work on one at a time. Makes it easier to trace what you did in case it doesn't work.

Try to update all of your programs on your computer. I had a very similar problem and that was the solution although I paid someone alot of money to find out!

Make sure you have enough memory in your computer. I am talking about RAM memory, not disk. If you have 96MB or less, add memory.
