You are part of a generation of people who have been raised with constant stimulation and passive entertainment. Your brain has been conditioned to always be bombarded by SOMETHING. The longer this goes on, the more stimulation you need to sustain your interest. Now, at 18, you're practically numb to most experiences. So sad. It is a disservice our culture and society has done to our young ones.
You can get out of it, though. Try this.... for one week, turn off all of your electronics (TV, video games, IPOD, music, etc.) Go for walks, read a book, take a nap, go camping. Give your brain a stimulation vacation and you will create what I call a mental vaccum. If you create space in your mind it just might fill up with YOUR thoughts. When you can entertain yourself, you wil not be bored!
If you are repulsed by the idea of an electronics vacation, then I'd say I'm right on.

Its an indication that your mind isn't nuanced enough to appreciate the sublteties of various activities.
For instance, I enjoy canoeing, and it is not that canoeing is some ultimate experience, but there are different strokes for paddling, and little variations on the way you can apply those strokes, etc. etc. etc. etc. ALso, if you paddle a canoe, you will find that sitting in the stern gives you the most speed, if you are alone, but it also makes it the hardest to keep a straight course, there are ways to manipulate your stroke . . .
Also, I used to lift weights a lot when I was in college, and although weightlifting itself wasn't all that great at times, it was the understanding of the end result that kept me motivated. After years of doing it I was so muscular and so athletic that I just found that much more motivation every time I went to the gym.
The person who says you are intelligent and creative is wrong.
If you are bored no matter what you do, it means that you lack focus, understanding, mental discipline and creative energy.
Basically your mind is dull and you are lazy in all probability.

I know how you feel. I easily get bored with stuff I do too. Boredom is a state of mind, I have come to understand. Nothing's wrong with you, as far as I know. Unless it's extreme. ADD is "the co-existence of attentional problems and hyperactivity, with each behavior occurring infrequently alone" which by your description...doesn't apply. Try to change your perspective or feelings about certain things; especially if they are things you know you have to do (like school and etc)...and in cases otherwise...just indulge in the things that interest you. A good way to make things interesting is to be creative and use a little imagination. Daydream! I can tell you're creative (with the writing and instrument playing), so use your art attitude to it's advantage. Or perhaps you can work on a project in a field of your interest to stimulate your mind. Here are a few ideas if you'd like; make a movie, write a song/start a band, write a book, make a magazine, write a screenplay...etc. It's what I do and am currently indulging myself with. If it works for me, I think it might work for you too. Take care.

You're likely bored for a couple of reasons...
1) You have expectations that the next thing you do, hobby you try, chachkie you buy will fulfill you...but it doesn't. Things don't fulfill. Relationships, giving selflessly, knowing and living out a God and others' centered, purposeful life does.
2) You have been conditioned to expect life to be entertaining. Life if NOT like TV. But all your life you have been dazzled and stimulated by mainly visual and audio media. So, when you go to actually live your life, try something new, visit a new place, meet or engage with people, you find the experience to be largely anti-climatic.
You are empty inside. You constantly struggle with your identity too. You want to be someone that you are not. Yet that "someone" is truly unattainable. You have created an idea of what life should be based on the input of the world - this empty, chaotic, shallow world. You need to find out who you really are based on eternal Truth, not on what is cool today.
You will stop being bored when you start living your life for someone besides yourself. Volunteer. Go to church. Reach out. Turn off your TV. No more media. No magazine images of the "perfect" bodies and lives and lifestyles. No IPod (gasp!). Just you reaching out to just us. We need you.

You are bored because you do not challenge yourself to excellence.
You are an intelligent person. Intelligent people get bored easily.
You need to go back to school and major in something way out left field, like Nuclear Engineering, or Physics or Calculus and Analytical Geometry. Something that will challenge you. Not only will you no longer be bored, but you will make yourself rich in the process with the education you will gain.

Below is the boring answer on why people get bored though!!
Boredom
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
Boredom is a reactive state of emotion that interprets the condition of one's environment as wearingly dull due to repetitive, non-existent or tedious stimuli. Boredom stems from a lack of interesting things to see, hear, or do (physically or intellectually) when not in the mood of "doing anything." Often it is a clearly subjective state; one person may find a classical music concert "boring," for example, while another may find it riveting.
Those afflicted with temporary boredom may regard the affliction as a waste of time, but usually characterize boredom as far worse. Alternatively, one may have the feeling that having too much spare time causes boredom. Indeed, time often appears to move more slowly to someone who experiences boredom, resulting from the way in which the human mind measures the passage of time and by the infrequency of notable events. Boredom can also occur as a symptom of clinical depression and may lead to impulsive (and sometimes excessive) actions that serve little purpose and could damage one's self interest. For example, studies in behavioral finance have shown that stock traders can enter into "overtrading" (buying or selling even without any objective reason to do so) simply because they feel bored when they have nothing "productive" to do.
Boredom can come from a lack of interest in a topic. This could result in a neuroreaction, in which case the mind wavers from the topic and into a subconcious thought. The brain will automatically go into a state, exempt from the objects around, but more focused on the matter in the "dream" state of mind. Boredom is similar to daydreaming, in a sense, because in both cases, the person thinks of an imaginable thought. In the case of boredom, however, the person's imagination takes over subconciously to pursue a more enjoyable thought. Often when one is bored, they invent things to solve this boredom, productive or not.

It's partly a mindset. Don't focus on the boring part...focus on the other parts. Find humor in everything (and trust me, it's out there).
