you were embarassed to unlock the door because then people would know that you actually locked your old embarassing car?? but you locked it anyway because you never knew when some criminal in need of a quick getaway would walk by your unlocked car and since all the nicer cars were locked and had alarm systems would choose to steal your car?

Yes. I still do. I have a 1992 dodge shadow stats so rusted out it's amazing that it still runs. The stereo/CD player are worth more than the car. So are my speakers. I odviously don't have a car payment and my insurance is only about 50 dollars a month. Plus it gets a great gas mileage. I only have to go to the gas station about once a month. It is embarrasing. I bought a remote key lock and start system with a lifetime guarantee for about 100 dollars and installed it myself. You should see people when I remote start it or lock the doors with the key fob as I'm walking away. But it's reliable and I've had it since it was new and I've never had to take it into a repair shop. Inside it's still like new, it has never been smoked in and is fully loaded and everything still works ( power locks, windows, mirrors and anti-lock brakes (ABS) plus air bags, cruse control intermitent wipers and air conditioning ). In addition to the extensive rust ( road salt,Michigan winters ) and the fact that the paint is nearly all flaked off, I am embarrased but not enough to go out and get me a car payment and the high insurance bill that comes with it. The only expense I've ever incurred besides the normal tune-ups, oil changes and occasional tire replacements ( I have run flat / nail guard tires ) the only maintenance I've had to do is replace the water pump, starter, altinater and belts. I'm still using the original radiator, condenser and battery etc. So yes it's an eye sore to look at but it starts every day and gets me where I want to go.

Lol! Most of my cars were like that! My dad always bought older used cars so that is what everyone in the family drove. When I was a senior in high school, I took auto mechanics because I knew that I'd need to be able to fix or at least diagnosis the problems those old cars would have. (I even got a $50 vocational scholarship for college after taking the class!)
Eventually, I came to realize that if I parked next to nicer car and covered up my valuables (I do have to leave musical instruments in the car sometimes,) and lock my car, theives will think it is too much trouble to break in to my junky looking car: they probably won't find anything worth stealing and would rather take a stereo from the car next to me.
Now, I am lucky enough to have 2 adult children who both work for a used car chain and can look out for good deals on cars. My son found a car for me from one of the dealerships with only 28,000 miles on it. It is only 7 years old and just happened to come with an alarm system. To me it is a nice car and I never want a new car because I don't want to have worry about it getting scratched and stolen. Also, insurance is much less on older cars. (My son's 1971 stationwagon is only $24 a month!) So you see, there may actually be advantages to that having that embarrassing car, and hey, at least you have transportation!

Absolutely, but it is usually the wacky (<- being nice)"so called" friends of mine that made fun of me for driving it or owning it at all.

However, since I was one of the first kids with wheels, that didn't stop them from riding with me to the movies, beach, or any other places we wanted to go.

It is a starter car, and through your beginnings are small; your latter end shall greatly increase! There will come a time that you will be able to purchase a car or someone may give you one debt free that won't be embarassing in appearance at all.

Be patient.

my dear we also lock cars because there may be something inside you don't want stolen! car alarms are a BIG joke. absolutely no one pays attention to them. Never be ashamed of what you have been given in life. If you are, than you are actually ridiculing those that have less than you. the chain goes on and on (in both directions)

In college I drove a minivan that my parents had given me. Everyone made fun of it but we used to love to load it up and go camping for the weekend. They always tried to sucker me into being the DD because then we wouldn't have to take two cars and get two DDs.

I never locked my car. I figured it was so hard to get the transmission to work if they wanted to try to drive it away they could have at it.
