I think Zidane will need to if he wants people to remember his career for the right reasons. He's a legend and must give his fans an explanation. Materazzi clearly said something that hurt Zidane. But all the same considering the stage the game was being played he should have kept his head.

People must remember Zidane for his footballing ability. He was up there with The best ever.

I think we should find out what Materazzi said before we judge Zidane...

You don't react that way, that quickly for just a common, everyday insult.

To get react like that, during the World Cup final, in front of millions of people, knowing what the consequences would be, and knowing it would be the last event in your career before retirement... well, you must have heard something pretty nasty...

Zidane deserved to be red carded for his assault... but don't judge him until you know the full story...

...and I've just heard on the news that FIFA are awarding him the Golden Ball for the tournament.

...sadly, it's also been suggested that Materazzi not only made a racist comment but also suggested that Zidane was a terrorist.

hmm... draw your own conclusion on that. Seems like a new low for the Italians which may come back on them and tarnish their win a little...

I don't know. Do you think that Materazzi will apologize to him for whatever it was he said to him. I'm disappointed with Zidane for what he did on the field but clearly wouldn't have had a problem with him meeting Materazzi in the alley after the game. He clearly overloaded his mouth and got called on it. Eventually it will come out and make Italy's shallow victory that much more dispicable.

Zidane has been playing football long enough to have just ignored it. He's not some teenager playing his first major game.

He also played for years in Serie A so should have been all too aware of the insults, nipple twisting etc from the Italians. It's common place in Italian football (and elsewhere) for the National team and club sides. Whether it's fair or not is another matter .

It's the same as the Rooney situation. Wind up the oppositions best player and watch him explode. Such a shame that ZZ wasn't man enough to let it go and now his career will always be remembered for that red card before any positives.

People seem to be wanting to paint Zidane as the victim but you can bet he has given as good as he has got over his career and no doubt tonight as well.

I hope Materazzi says he's sorry for whatever messed up thing he said to Zidane.

What does Zidane have to apologize for? He got his punishment. Now, karma will come back to Materazzi someday.

And likewise Materazzi should apologize to Zidane for the insult.

Hell no, Materazzi obviously said something racist to Zidane about him being of Algerian descent, that would be the only way to make Zizou do something like that, and anyway Mat milked it abit, but hey i'd rather be Zizou right now thn a cheating racist fool. But im guessing as usual with FIFA nothing will happen to the Italian, but Zizou has now nothing to lose.

Vive Les Bleus!

I think the best thing to do is apologize to each other. I think Zidane should do it first though even if Materazzi started it. It would be the more gentlemanly thing to do.

Why should he???!!!

He was provoked.......

If you are not prepared for the consequences then you should not be a bully! He got exactly what he deserved, maybe that will teach him a lesson and he'll stop being a sh*t.

I think in fact, that materazzi should apologise for ruining Zidane's last day!!!
