Toads are less water dependent than frogs. While frogs have very smooth, thin skin to absorb water, this also means that they can dry out VERY fast if away from water for too long. Toad skin is bumpy and leathery to hold water in better, so they can spend a majority of their time on land without dehydrating as quickly.

Frogs and toads are related, but they're not exactly alike. Frogs have smooth, slick skin, while toads have warty, bumpy skin (by the way, you can't get warts by touching a toad!). Thus, the bumpy skin is a camouflage thing and they were just formed that way...Thus.. in summation....
Frogs have slimy skin to stay moist when it is dry, and toads have bumpy skin to help camouflage them in their habitat. Some frogs and toads have paratoidal glands which secrete poisons as protection which can cause skin irritations and may be poisonous to some species of animals, but warts have nothing at all to do with the frogs themselves

toads have evolved to go further from water than frogs. some toads can even live in desert climates. spawning only once every few years when it rains enough to form small streams and pools. this is why their skin is harder and more durable than a frog's. frog's can partially breathe through their skin along with salamanders and newts, toads cannot. frogs, salamanders and newts must always be near a clean source of water or they will die.
