My favorite book from the Colonial era is called "My Brother Sam is Dead" by James and Christopher Collier. It is historical fiction with an outline of what has actually been historically documented following the story, giving a story to bring the realities of the times to life and backing it with some good, solid facts.
If you want a book that is far more advanced and quite a bit longer, Leon Uris wrote "Exodus." This is a book which chronicles the founding of the state of Israel. It's not about the U.S., but gives some real insights into other's fight for independence.
There are biographys, written for every age, on the founding fathers of the United States. Two of my favorites are John Adams and Thomas Jeffereson. Check the local book store or library for biographys based on the age and interest of the reader.

Go to Amazon.com and search:
"Lost from Atlantis Book 1"
"Death by Murder David Lindsay"
and "Super Spaghetti"
They're free if you have Kindle Unlimited, and you can get a free trial of that - Google how.
If you don't have a Kindle you can get a free smartphone app from Google Play, or read it online - all free.
