Grade + 5 = years, roughly. For instance, a 6 year old would be in first grade, and an 11 year old would be in 6th grade. Of course, this is a very basic guidelines. Sometimes, you have older or younger kids in a class/grade, but for 95% of American and Canadian students, this rule is correct.

Very generally, children in the United States begin school in Kindergarten at age 5, making them 6 in 1st Grade. But, it is not uncommon for children to also begin at 4 or 6 either, depending on their birth-dates and their readiness for school. So, that would make a 12th grader between 16-18. In traditional high schools, freshmen are 9th graders, sophomores are 10th graders, juniors are 11th graders, and seniors are 12th graders. There are many different types of schools in the United States besides public schools. Private schools, Charter Schools, and Faith-based Schools are all available choices as well as Home-Schooling.

this is hard to explain but usually a senior is 17, a freshman is in their first year of highschool,a sophmore is in the second year a junior is in third year and senior is in 4th year and the credits play a big role too. usually u have to have 25 credits to graduate. however i am about to be in 10th grade and have 10 or 11 credits already.
