What the italian player said to him must have been very very insulting. I have never seen Zidane do that before, what was he doing, idiot he could have won the game for france. Honesly his final game and he ruins it for the whole team.... It is the greatest player on the planet, but yet he did the most stupidest thing on the planet....

first of all F@$* all of you who are talking crap about zidane. he was and is a great player and nobody can take that away. Zidane has his reason for doing what he did. nobody should gudge him or his career for what he did. Especially if you don't have all the facts in. All we know is that they exchanged words and mater-@%#er said something that made zidane lose control and act on impulse. doesn't matter that he is a "professional" ;you people need to remember he is human. as for could've france won that doesn't matter. whats done is done. It's almost like saying what if the ref wouldn't of called the NON-penalty during the australia game. Italy is a good team nun the less FRANCE is a better one.
one last thing to most of you. Don't think or say that this is the way that Zinedine ZIDANE wanted his career to end. those of you that do are stupid.
I'm pretty sure he regrets not waiting to the end to resolve this feud. Most of all not being able to say good bye.
i'm not disapointed. Thank you Zidane (10) Zinedine
( benjamin bombard ) my guess is you didn't watch the world cup games. Brazil was playing like crap through out most of their games. not to mention they didn't face any real teams with experiance until they played france. As for germany; all i can say is that they were beat fairly by the italians. i expected france and germany to be in the final but it didn't go that way.
zidane shouldn't have any regrets on the way he played. the maestro will be missed. It would be nice to see him in one more game so he can retire the right way.

Not really. Both the teams played quite well throughout the match
but in the end, I saw what actually happened, the Italian scorer was trying to grab Zidane from behind while Z was about to get the ball. It propbably made him angry, he couldn't control, moments later he viciously headed into the Italian's chest.
No referees actually saw what happened, because the ball was already far away from the event place, I think the lineman took the opportunity of the replay on big-screen, the decision was made quickly, they red carded Zidane.
It's a big 'if' because Zidane did lose temper & got ousted, so we can't say what would happen if he wasn't ousted. It's a part of the game. Poor Zidane, in his last WC match got red carded.

Oh thank you babylongboy!!! Obviously the Italians wanted Zidane to be sent off. I'm French, and I'm not pissed at Zidane, but not at all. I am just really pissed that they got HIM to do such a thing. Especially at a moment like this. These Italians don't deserve to even play. I'm so fed up with all their dirty tricks to take advantage of things and people, and of them getting away with everything. But I suppose it's like in life, it's not always the ones that deserve things that get them. But some people will have realized that they are the real bastards. Still, I hate the idea of the whole world thinking they can judge the great player and man that Zidane has always proved he was in the past. Without even knowing what happened. Who do they think they are ? Zidane reacted to some very very low provocations, and it seems it had been going on for a while. So f*** off to all the people that think they can judge him just like that, without even knowing what happened. Sorry for being so rude but it really pisses me off and even hurts me like people think they can judge him. Now if all that you have to say is, "no matter what has been said to him, blah blah blah", it's all I've been hearing and reading yesterday and 2day, so please refrain.

He is just an human.
Imagine that for 100 minutes, somebody insults your origins. Also, Zidane suffered a lot of pressure.
This man was reported crying inside the locker room because of his pain.
He is a greatest player of the last 20 years because he is an artist, smart and a great man overall.
The soccer federations should not allowed any "racist" speech from players. Sadly, the racism in soccer is becoming a growing issue.
I just hope Zidane will talk soon about what he has done.

From my gathering, I would guess that Materazzi said something incredibly racist to offend Zidane. Background info: Zidane is French Algerian (African descent). Also, the Italian Serie A League is notoriously racist/fascist with several well known incidents in the stands of matches.
Note the banners of "Say No To Racism" throughout this WC. FIFA needs to investigate what Materazzi said to Zidane and possibly issue a punishment to Materazzi.

Actually I agree with Molotovsix. It was clear that his injured shoulder was being grabbed and strained badly (seemingly intentionally if you see the video), and then to top that... I think as he was walking away Materazzi said something race or ethnicity related... Since this would be one of the hotter issues in Zidane's mind. But that's just an assumption, noting that he should make a statement at some point!

**Materazzi called Zidane a "dirty terrorist**
The Paris-based anti-racism advocacy group SOS-Racism issued a statement Monday quoting "several very well informed sources from the world of football" as saying Materazzi called Zidane a "dirty terrorist." It demanded that FIFA, soccer's world governing body, investigate and take any appropriate action.
FIFA, which reviews all red cards at the World Cup, would not comment on the specifics.

Zidane as one of the greatest players in the world showed a lack of respect for his team, and his country. That was a extremely unprofessional and brutal foul. As an american rooting for France to win over Italy is unheard of. At the beginning I believed France deserved to win for their hard work under their leader Zidane. After that foul I was rooting for Italy to win. Congratulations Italy and Zidane go retire, get a very well deserved fine from FIFA and thanks for ruining one of the greatest games and sports in the world!

i read this somewhere. This might help.
Materazzi spoke in Italian - a language understood by Zidane due to his time spent with Juventus F.C. - and first told him: "Hold on, wait, that one's not for a ****** like you." As the players walked forward, Materazzi allegedly said: "We all know you are the son of a terrorist *****." Then, just before the headbutt, he was seen saying: "So just **** off." [8] [9] According to Brazilian TV Rede Globo, a lip-reader claimed that Materazzi twice called Zidane's sister a prostitute.
