There are more than a few places to check value, on-line and off.
Off-line try your local library and/or bookstore, there are many many books on the value of sports cards.
On-line try these sites for starters.

You can also check out ebay and craigslist, and type in a specific card into google for more information on that particular card.

You can go onto ebay and search sports trading cards, then on the left side near bottom you will see completed items and you can see what the cards have sold for. Also you can search for trading cards price guides on ebay or abebooks.

Look at guides like Beckett and Tuff Stuff. Also, watch eBay auctions for particular sets and players to see where they stand. It would also make sense to check out your local or nearest sports card or hobby shop and talk with the dealers in there, since they are privy to set availabilities and certain player and rookie prospects.
