Firstly, there is no basis for accusing Materazzi of being the villain or racist. Why people are suggesting he provoked Zidane is a mystery. There is no evidence to suggest Materazzi did anything wrong. The supposed professional lip readers employed to decipher Materazzi's language are not coming up with a definitive answer as there are many different interpretations of what could have been said floating around. For example, some sources say it was a racist slur by Materazzi while other say it was something about Zidane's mother, sister, and/or wife All we do know is that Materazzi and Zidane were talking back and forth. It could have been Zidane who provoked a verbal response from Materazzi which Zidane hated or it could simply have been a mutual exchange of obscenities. Nobody knows right now and anything said is pure speculation based primarily on bias for 1 side over the other. These are things people who say Materazzi "must" have said something are overlooking in their rush to defend Zidane. There is no proof and it is simply a case of finding Materazzi guilty without evidence. Guilty until prven innocence. Simply because you hate someone doesn't mean they are guilty.
Secondly, people who portray Zidane as a normally calm person either do not know his tendencies or overlook the evidence. Zidane has a history of spontaneous violent outbursts on the field including other headbutting instances and stomping on players with intent to injure. .

Zidane's reaction is clearly the result of more than what was seen on TV. Most likely, Materazzi had been trash-talking since minute 1, he doesn't know better, that is a substantial part of his personal interpretation of "football". Zidane just had enough, maybe because of a particularly offensive comment that triggered his reaction. Although regrettable, it is fairly comprehensible. All those who say it is inexcusable, probably are the same ones who call this sport "soccer", call Materazzi "Maseratti", and don't accept a headbutt as a response to words but couldn’t care less if half middle eastern population is killed by bombs using freedom as an excuse.

First of all the name is MATERAZZI!!!!!!
Here is the rumor I heard:
"According to French radio, Materazzi had been baiting Zidane repeatedly throughout the game. Final insult: "You're just a terrorist monkey!" (Apparently Zidane's father fought against his fellow Algerians when they were fighting the French; this is a v.sensitive issue with Zidane.)
The Brazilian TV show "Fantastico!" had lip-readers watch the coverage and claimed with some degree of certainty that Materazzi had called Zidane's sister a prostitute, then told him to **** off.
Zidane still won the Golden Ball (World Cup MVP) award today."
Real futbol players know: what happens on the field stays there. Unfortunately SO MUCH happens on the field, it's hard to think you can be a fair judge of anyone's behavior (ahem, Figo headbutting the Netherland player in the face).

We all know that there's a major scandal in Italian football Serie A, including Juventus. Maybe just before the headbutt incident, Buffon said to Zidane, "Hey bro, if Italy wins the World Cup, I think there's a chance FIGC won't press charges about the scandal. So, will you save the team (Juventus) from degradation, for old time sakes? We'll reward you too if you help us - Serie A teams that's part of the scandal - from degradation!" (FYI Zidane is a formere Juventus player).
So, when Zidane met Materazzi few seconds before the incident, Zidane asked, "Ready to save your Serie A, bro?" Materazzi said, "OK, but not too hard ok brr... OUGGHH!!!" (Zidane strikes him with the headbutt before Materazzi even finishes his sentence). Then Zidane said, "Hope that's worth it, bro!"
So, by doing that, he gets a red card, being sent off the pitch, and giving the Italian the chance to win, so FIGC will rethink about the scandal in Serie A.
Nice football conspiracy theory! ^_^v
PS: Hope that's NOT what really happened! Coz I think both teams deserves the Cup, for their nice performance (professionally). For Zidane, what a way to end things up with your carreer, since THAT isn't like you at all... And as for FIGC, don't stop investigating about the football scandal in Serie A! Show the world what FAIR PLAY is all about! And for Germany, what a VERY fantastic host for this fantastic game!! Viva Football all over the world!!!

Please,All the idiots who don't like or care about OUR FOOTBALL,and didn't follow zidane's great carrier for the last decade stop posting these idiotic comments stick with your excieting baseball and super boooooowlls, why is it you don't care about this game but in the same time attacking zidane, and thinking you're funny with your comment but it only showes your hatered and envy, not to mention some racist comments. emagine for a second if it was a black american player or an israeli player and matterazi kept harrassing him then said an awoful racial slur to him, what would be his reaction and how will people's reaction would be,I think very different than in this case, and he would have the right to react anyway unimaginable and immidiatly matterazi would have been suspended and fined even dragged to court.and the media would've slaughtered him,not with this incident,I wonder what would've been the case then?for both the players and public, even all of us here, but now all the wondefull history of this great player is shadowed and all his fans and neutral viewers are now trying to defend him with no use, like it or not racial discrimination is a big factor in life and it showed strongly in all the hype surrounding this matter

And I quote from wikipedia.org,
"Since both players refused to comment on the incident, there are various allegations about what led to Zidane's violent outburst. His agent, Alain Migliaccio has claimed that a "very serious" comment by Matterazzi provoked the attack. Reportedly, the deaf forensic lip-reader Jessica Rees was employed to analyze the video sequences with the help of an Italian translator. According to these reports, Materazzi spoke in Italian - a language understood by Zidane due to his time spent with Juventus F.C. - and first told him: "Hold on, wait, that one's not for a n*gger like you." As the players walked forward, Materazzi allegedly said: "We all know you are the son of a terrorist whore." Then, just before the headbutt, he was seen saying: "So just f*ck off." According to Brazilian TV Rede Globo lip-reader, Materazzi called Zidane's sister a prostitute two times. Earlier claims about Materazzi calling his opponent player himself a "dirty terrorist" have already been denied by Materazzi, who reportedly said: "It is absolutely not true, I did not call him a terrorist. I'm ignorant. I don't even know what the word means."

MATERAZZI SAID:
ZIdane you soreloser...you will never win the Golden Ball...you have been suspended during the group stage for collecting two yellow cards, and now just about to get sent off, yet still qualify to receive the tournament’s most prestigious individual award? Did you forget Zidane that you were also booked against Switzerland and Korea Republic, amounting to a one-match suspension for France’s last group match against Togo . How can FIFA defend you man and honor you as the player of the Tournament? Disgraceful. Shameful FIFA, shameful Zidane.
Zidane I bet if you give me an awesome HEADBUTT totally against the FIFA's basic rules of Fair Play, which are nothing short of a disgrace…they (FIFA) hypocritically will still honor you......try it Zidane.... go on , go on, go on, give me that HEADBUTT. Also the FRENCH WILL FORGIVE YOU, AND MAKE YOU A HERO!!!
Then Gallas too, may just want to "smash my face", or perhaps YOUR mother ZIDANE, YES YOUR MOTHER wants nothing short of "castration" for me? Bring back the guillotine ZIZOU! Seems like awfully aggressive behavior, but you can do anything ZIZOU baecause you are the HERO.
Not mine, as ITALIA has the CUP.
And one final word on the difference between you Zidane and me Materazzi: "Zidane's header may have knocked out Materazzi; but Materazzi's towering header in the 18' knocked out France; GOAL. Simple as that."

I believe the only type of comment that would set Zidane off like that would be a racial slur. Look at the ethnic makeup of each team, then draw your own conclusions! Provocation to fight would have been met, more likely, with a wry smile and a, 'meet me after the match!', verbal response rather than the response Zidane actually gave.

Ray don't be stupid. Yahoo's mainpage story states that the French Coach said that ZIdane's actions were "regrettable." And all of you are a bit dense for thinking Materazzi's name is actually Maseratti. lol.

Zidane was 100% human minus god for a glitch of a nanosecond! He did not hear what Maseratti say, he hear the voice of retaliation!
Anyway I pray that god bless Zidane with peace for he did realise it the next moment. WEALTH N HONOR COME FROM HIM.
Zidane-god=............
