I*ve been told a railroad apt is one where all the rooms are in a straight line; as in front door, then living room, then dining room then kitchen then the bedrooms in a row after that.
A hallway goes down the line just outside the rooms, just like in a railway car.

WOW I haven't heard that term in years. I have to believe it's an apt. in which all rooms are inline from front to back,,,much like a railroad car
