You need to strengthen the abdominal muscles. Crunches are good, but you also need to do cardio. You cannot burn fat by building muscle alone. You're only 2 years older than me, and if you're in decent shape I would suggest advanced Tae Bo. I love that workout. If you follow the directions and keep your abs flexed while you're doing all the kicks and stuff you should start seeing reduction of belly fat within a month easy. Also try not to have a lot of fat in the diet, but don't go crazy and not eat enough. I made that mistake and I've found a bodybuilding approach is much better for me to lose weight. I need to eat a lot more than diets recommend or I will never lose the weight. I would say Tae Bo, or if you're looking for something a little less strenuous on the joints try swimming. The butterfly is a stroke that will whip the abs and upper body into shape in no time, but any swimming is good for you.

Cardio. Walking or swimming are great, also find out if you can meet with a nutritionist to talk about diet, caloric needs, and eating healthy without compromising your energy level. The american cancer society has some really great recipes (honest, I tried the greek chicken and was super delicious).

Having an exercise buddy is a good idea too, someone who has a clear and realistic weight loss or health goal and who has similar hours to you. If your joints are ok (mine aren't which is why I mention it), taking walks on your lunch break if possible is good, and using the stairs whenever possible helps a bunch.

Make yourself sweat everyday and DON'T EAT JUNK FOOD!!

Excersize really helps! Even if it's only 5 min. a day to start with! You'll see small results and it gives you a little inspiration to do more!!!

I've been gradually increasing my excersize more and more and it's really working!

Just remember that Yo Yo dieting can make your metabolism slower and slower. That's why it's so difficult for people to lose weight in their 30's

I heard somewhere that no matter hard you exercise one area of the body, it still won't reduce the fat significantly if your body uses that part of the body to store its "reservoir" fat. I guess the best exercise is to just do cardio. For me, my reserve fat is stored in my legs, so they look abnormally larger than the rest of my body. I try to keep them in check by jogging regularly, although i know i will never have a marathoner's physique.

are you muscular and athletic? if this is the case, i doubt you're overweight.... however, if your doctor says so, try playing a sport that you enjoy, really, anything that gets your heart going and makes your body active will eventually burn fat. the belly is especially hard to target, as all women tend to gain excess fat their in order to protect their uterus (genetically determined, unfortunately, for those of us who don't plan on having kids yet).

Abdominal crunches are the best. After I had my child I had a personal trainer and we targeted my tummy with abdominal crunches and it worked well for me.
