Firstly to win the champions league is hard, and at the same time the team trying is usually competing for their domestic title and perhaps a cup so its different to the World cup winners who have a year and half to two years before attemptin qualifying again. So no - dont think that is the case.

Having said that I am still a firm believer in only the champions of each league competiting for the European Cup, not the top 3,4 or sometimes 5 in the elite leagues and then the other nations having to try to qualify.

I don't think the Champions League Winners do automatically get a place. Last year, Liverpool had to get special dispensation to compete and in a previous year the winners were (Real Madrid?) and when they finished outside the top four in Spain, the Spanish FA had to chose who to put forward to the champions League. In the case of this year, the English FA were almost in the situation where they would have to choose between Arsenal and Spurs to fill the 4th English spot.

Champions League winners don't automatically qualify for next year's competition. Liverpool was given a place in the first preliminary round of the CL as a dispensation so they would eventually maybe be able to defend their title.

Don't change both rules.
