Most CD's will hold 800mb comfortably by overburning, they are only 'certified' for 700. But there is simply only so much linear space available on a CD because the laser beam that burns it is so big. DVD's hold more because, for one reason, the beam that burns the disks is so much smaller than the beam that burns a CD.

Like the old days of the 720/1.44mb floppy (and the 360/720), in most cases on quality disks, you could punch the hole that told the machine it was double sided, and use both sides of the disk.

Why would you want a CD for over 1gb, why not just use a DVD?

sounds like a good item for you to invent as there is no such thing now. You can compress (.zip) files to make them smaller if that would help.
