If you IM someone, can they find out your location, your IP address or anything else just by chatting with you? Or can they see JUST your profile and screen name?

If you only use the basic AIM messaging functionality, no, they can't determine your IP address; however, if you "direct connect" to the person, then they will be able to obtain your IP address.

Just don't use the "direct connect" feature, and you should be OK.

That doesn't mean that if you're harrasing someone over AIM that they can't go to AOL and complain or worse, hire a lawyer to get AOL to release your information if you've been making threats or been involved in illegal activities.

Most people don't have the intelligence or technology to find out IP addresses, but there are programs that can find out information. With a simple program called a keylogger you can discretely log another persons computer and it will record every single key they typed, and what program they typed it on, depending on the intellitence of the program.

It is possible to find out all about someone through any form of messenger, but most of the people using AOL Instant Messenger(AIM) are teenage kids who just talk to their friends.

Without equipment like keyloggers or other programs, all thats viewable is your profile(and anything put put in it, such as links) and your name .

They can only see your profile and your screen name, unless you transfer files or direct connect with them.
