Squids are not aggressive by nature, but in certain cercumstances will if felt to be threatened, attack humans, the Humbolt Squids have done so, only in their self defense mode. Possibly by invading their space or making an aggresivive move triggered the attack. Also during mating.
National Geographic did a special on this and proved humans can inner act with them. It showed the divers at night , when the squids are more likely to feed and come up from deep waters, the divers flashed lights down toward the deeper parts of the ocean all of a sudden they were visited by several squid, out of curiosity. The squid flashed their lights a few times swam by the divers and checked them out then left as quickly as they came,
Just as shark often mistake shadows on the surface such as a swimmer with surf board, and thought were source of food. Sharks are mistakenly labeled as man-eaters. Which is not the case, only in the movies.

I was unable to find the sight again, but I remember reading about this very thing. There was an account from several sailors off the northeastern coast of Africa in the late 1800's who say their ship was attacked by a giant squid. They said it paced the ship and would turn to attack the bow. They said it did this three times but was finally killed when it slipped and got hit by the engine blades. That would be freaky!

As far as I know there have been no recent reports of death by a giant squid, but they have attacked people, divers in the California gulf, that's where they are found most often.
