In the book "Angels and Demons" by Dan Brown, an alternate theory for the word "Lucifer" is proposed.
Hundreds of years ago, when the Vatican was in high power, there was a group of scientists who called for enlightenment. They wanted knowledge of the world around them, not believing ridiculous explanations by the church. The Vatican, of course, saw this as a threat to their power and banished the group.
The congregation did not die, but was made stronger. Supposed members of this group were the scientist and astronomer Galileo, and architect / sculptor Bernini. They called themselves the Illuminati, the Illuminators. The group was also called Lucifer, the bringer of light.
The church was fearful that the citizens would catch on to the scientists and turn against the word of God. The church deemed the group as being sacrilegious. In turn, everything about the Illuminati became seen as satanic. Including the word "Lucifer."
(side note) Modern satanists are very different than the scientists who started the Illuminati. These are people who believed the descriptions the church gave of the "evil" group. They began performing practices like devil worship, trying to be like the original rebellion against the church.

Hi! I don't believe in a "devil" as an external force. We all have an internal darkness or what I would rather refer to as fear, that is always present in everyone. I just think it's easier for people to point the finger at someone/something else when they act less then their potential. I did read the Lucifer is STILL an angel doing GOD'S will of tempting and trying to strengthen us morally but like I said...I don't believe it.

NO, the devil used to be Lucifer.
He no longer is call Lucifer, after he desires the Lord's throne and lied to millions of angels, this name was taken away from him and he was named : Satan.
Cause he was the most beautiful light that God had, but Now the son of God (Jesus Christ) is the most Beautiful Light of God and the light of the world.
I'm not saying that the devil was the light of the world, no, but he was a light to the skies. Now he is the dark of the world.

Lucifer was the most beautiful angel in heaven, he was responsible for the music there and one day he wanted to be just like God and God got mad and kicked him out of heaven along with all the other angels who wanted to follow Lucifer.

You are correct.
In popular thought the two are the same (as the previous posts have demonstrated). But, in fact, the equation is based on a mistake, as almost all scholars (conservative and liberal alike) will tell you.
Satan is, of course, the great angelic rebel, leader of the rebel angels and accuser of God's people. (His role is not as clearly developed in the Old Testament -- we only see him three times [1 Chronicles 21, Job 1-2 and Zechariah 3].)
On the other hand, the name "Lucifer" --in the Bible at least-- refers to someone else. The name or title is the Latin translation for the "Day Star" in Isaiah 14. And the prophecy itself specifically says it is about the King of Babylon.
Note the setting -- God has just been talking about the captivity into which the King of Babylon will take Israel (as happened in 586 BC) and the promise of their return. Then he turns to pronounce his JUDGMENT on this arrogant king and enemy of his people.
The prophecy is mostly a description of how this lofty king is brought down to the GRAVE. There he is greeted by other dead kings marvel that even this mighty king has been brought down, just like them! NONE of this fits the idea that this character is Satan or symbol for him.
The basis for the misunderstanding is the HIGH language used to describe this person (e.g., "Day Star") and his lofty position. They look at this language and think it is inappropriate to a mere human being. But that is exactly the POINT!! In fact, this was just the sort of language Near Eastern kings, who considered themselves sons of the gods, used about THEMSELVES. Its use in this passage is to MOCK the king and his pretension.
Something very similar happens in a prophecy against the King of Tyre in Ezekiel 28. Again the passage specifically TELLS us it is about the King of Tyre. Ezekiel's language is based on a poetic description of the exalted position of the first man (Adam) who lived in God's presence (in Eden) and the clothing of a high priest (simlar to that found in Exodus 28-29).
In other words, these passages are talking about HUMAN pride and rebellion. It may indeed resemble the rebellion of the being we konw as Satan, but these passages are NOT about Satan.

Geez, doesn't anybody here read? I mean, READ the Bible before you quote it, man. Lucifer is only mentioned in the Bible, and only in the Vulgate, at that, in a parable admonishing the King of Babylon for his pride.
The Bible doesn't say anything about the fall of Satan - never mind Lucifer, the light-bringer - the personification of the Dawn, if you will.

He started out as the god of enlightment. His fall from grace is ironic, right about the time Christianity took hold. That's when everyone put thier blinders on and became sheep. The only way to enlightment is by questioning....the church worried that everyone would be on to the BS if too many questioned what was going on so it was decided that Lucifer become the symbol of what happens when you try to achieve enlightment through asking questions by demonizing him and scaring the common mass half to death with it. The church is quite an amazing mind control device. I want its power for myself.

Lucifer's name was changed to Satan when God threw him out of Heaven. Satan is the master deceptor. He comes disguised as an angel of light, hence the original name Lucifer.

Because he was the favorite angel. He was almost perfect but could not live with knowing that he wasn't. He could not agree with God's high regards for mere humans. So Lucifer will not be described as evil in all references- for once he was good- very good.
